Despite its proximity to the bustle of Nairobi, Kitui is one of the least developed areas in Kenya and features en route to more popular game viewing areas such as Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks. It might be considered a drive through town, but if you were to spend a day here you would discover the local Kamba tribe and their colourful village.
This is definitely the place to stock up on the famous local artefacts such as wooden carved curios and woven baskets, hand-made by this hospitable tribe. Anyone who has travelled to Kenya will undoubtedly have come across the miniature carvings of elephants, antelopes, lions, reptiles and even necklace pendants. The weaving of baskets is also a major industry, practised mostly by woman, and is a means of income to support their families.
