The remote and rugged Rodrigues lies 560km to the east of Mauritius and, at only 109km2, it's the smallest of the Mascarenes. Rodrigues is surrounded by a coral reef and is only just starting to open up to tourism, so you'll have your fill of deserted beaches and isolated lagoons.
The island was discovered by the Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues in 1528, colonised by French Huguenots in 1691, and abandoned again in 1693.
Why they wanted to leave, goodness only knows. If you aren't too bothered by the lack of first world service and five star accommodation, Rodrigues offers the peace and solitude of a place long cut off from the rest of the world. The island was also the home to the dodo's (now similarly extinct) cousin, the solitaire.
