As an African travel company that's passionate about Africa, we have a responsibility to the communities, wildlife and environment in the destinations we promote.
We need to support responsible travel to these amazing places because it makes business sense, yes, but also because we have an online platform that we can use to make a positive contribution.
As an African operator with global reach we can help raise awareness of thoughtful development and conservation in places that we encourage our travellers to experience.
Below we've listed some projects that are making a huge contribution to developing, sustaining and protecting African communities, wildlife and conservation efforts. We've also listed some of the projects Go2Africa contributes to or participates in so you can see if we're living up to our own standards.
We're keen supporters of Uthando, an NGO that's also a responsible tourism operator in Cape Town, and we get involved in some of their projects. Most recently a team from Go2Africa helped plant a garden that feeds and greens a local community.
When South Africa experienced an outbreak of violence towards refugees from neighbouring countries, Go2Africa employees filled a car load of clothing and food for distribution at one of the temporary camps set up for them.
On the environmental side of responsibility, we've adopted a blind rhino, Max, through the African Wildlife Foundation, and we've also recently calculated our carbon footprint. We have a lot of trees to start planting - 323, to be precise - but we're aiming to be carbon neutral within a year.
If the projects we've selected inspire you like they inspire us, we've included links directly to the relevant sites so you can find out more, and contribute if you wish to. A few of the projects we've selected are funded or assisted by some of our key suppliers, but we've chosen those that are run independently and that don't actively promote a supplier.
Children in the Wilderness, Africa Foundation, Footballs for Fun and the Dreamfields Project are all projects that we think are doing great work in addressing fundamental issues in Africa. Poverty, HIV/Aids and empowerment are of huge concern to us as an African travel company - and of course with the 2010 World Cup being hosted by South Africa, we feel a little good-natured football fun is equally crucial to the wellbeing of our children.
Malawi's Lilongwe Wildlife Centre invites people to adopt one of the orphaned or injured animals they rescue, feed and care for. You can also adopt an elephant at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust or a leopard or cheetah at Africat.
As most of our travellers come out to experience Africa's wildlife and environment, many want to aid its conservation.
You can become a chimp guardian through the Jane Goodall Institute, which focuses on primate conservation. Or, if Victoria Falls is on your African safari itinerary, you may agree with us about the importance of the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit which directly affects people, animals and the environment around one of the world's natural wonders.
Close to home for us at Go2Africa is the Dyer Island Conservation Trust which focuses on conservation, awareness and research on one of the most important bird areas in South Africa. DICT needs people to house penguins by sponsoring a penguin nest box, which can be done from their website.
