overview

Oude Werf’s history can be traced back to 1802, when it was built on the remains of Stellenbosch’s first church, which had been constructed in 1687. And although the region’s heritage runs through all that Oude Werf does, the hotel is certainly not stuck in the past. Each of the 58 rooms has modern finishes and contemporary furnishings while its eco-consciousness is definitely part of the 21st century.

Rumoured to harbour the odd (friendly) ghost, the suites at Oude Werf overlook the poolside gardens or vine-covered courtyard. Stellenbosch is known for its Mediterranean climate – meaning hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters – but guests here will be comfortable no matter what the weather.

Its convenient and central position on one of this quaint university town’s main streets allows you to stroll under its famous oaks but also allows you easy access to drive to the surrounding wine estates. This is South Africa’s premium wine country and wine lovers will be spoilt for choice when choosing from the country’s many prestigious vintages.

Dining

Oude Werf’s dining history dates back the 19th century when Tant Betje Wium created her hearty country dishes for grateful guests. Today the hotel’s restaurant has an in-situ kitchen, a roaring fireplace for winter evenings and a delightful courtyard as well as a streetside patio for alfresco meals.

Breakfast includes everything from a classic buffet of seasonal fruit, local cheese and pastries to a cooked breakfast like smoked salmon crumpets or eggs benedict and freshly brewed barista coffee.

For lunch, try something that takes its influences from traditional South African cuisine like Cape snoek fishcakes, a ‘bunny chow’ (curry served in a hollowed-out loaf of soft white bread) or boerewors, a sausage served with a type of polenta known as ‘krummel pap’.

Afternoon nibbles also reference South Africa with delicate pastries known as ‘hertzoggies’ and mini milktarts, along with cookies, cakes and savoury snacks for high tea.

Dinner sees traditional Cape flavours being given a modern twist, all using superb local ingredients. Consider starting with a soup made with Karoo venison biltong (a traditional dried meat) topped with a delicious vetkoek. Or tuck into Atlantic salmon accompanied by excellent South African wine.

Superior Room

Oude Werf has 58 rooms, most of which are in the old inn-house or are centred around the poolside gardens. Most of the first-floor rooms have lift access and inter-leading, family-friendly suites are available. All have contemporary styling punctuated by subtle period details that give a gentle nod to the hotel’s storied history.

The 23 Superior Rooms have en suite bathrooms with a shower only and a single vanity. Choose between a king-sized or twin beds, while some have private balconies with chairs for enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day.

Other rooms

More spacious and offering tubs as well as showers in their en suite bathrooms, the 23 Superior Plus Rooms all have private patios.

Housed in the original inn-house, the dozen Deluxe Rooms are Oude Werf’s signature accommodation. With free-standing tubs, plenty of space and individual Nespresso coffee machine, they are perfect for honeymooners or guests who feel like treating themselves to something special.

"The Oude Werf is a charming historical hotel located in the heart of Stellenbosch. This is the oldest hotel in South Africa and what surprised me most was how stylish the rooms are and had a homely feel. Here you can live like a local and enjoy the restaurants, galleries and tourist attractions. Great for couples and honeymooners as it does have that romantic appeal. They also cater for families."
