The original thatched homestead is set among beautiful gardens, against the backdrop of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, offering a peaceful and tranquil retreat. Hunters Country House is a member of the Relais & Châteaux groups and provides exceptional service and attention to detail. Relax in the homely atmosphere of the antique furnished lounge, or outside by the swimming pool. Stroll through the estate's private forest and enjoy the sights and songs of the plentiful birds.

Five golf courses are within easy access of the estate, while the golden beaches of Plettenberg Bay lie just 10 minutes away. Hunters Country House welcomes children of all ages and has a recreation area, including a shallow swimming pool, games room and thatch-covered sandpit, especially for children.

Sumptuous buffet breakfasts are served in the sunny glass house of the conservatory with views of the garden.

Enjoy a relaxing meal made with the freshest ingredients at the Summer House, an innovative and informal dining experience.

Garden Suite

There are 18 luxury cottage suites situated among the beautifully manicured gardens of this old English country estate. The individual thatched-roof suites are comfortable and spacious, and guarantee the privacy you'd expect from a Relais & Chateaux property.

Located along winding paths through the garden, the eight Garden Cottages offer a mix of traditional furnishings with modern day colours and fabrics. Each cottage has a fireplace, air conditioning, and an en suite bathroom with a separate bath and shower, as well as a garden patio.

Other Room Types

The five Superior Garden Suites are larger than the Garden Cottages, and include a full couch and extra armchair beside the fireplace. Each suite has air conditioning and an en suite bathroom with a separate shower and bath. The garden patio of these suites has additional loungers and a parasol.

The two Deluxe Pool Suites have a dining area and a separate lounge with a large flat screen TV. French doors open from the lounge onto a patio with its own plunge pool and garden. The spacious en suite bedroom has a separate dressing room and a large bathroom with dual basins, heated towel rails, and an outdoor shower. The patio has a table and chairs set for dining alfresco, and loungers beside the poolside.

Ideal for families, the two Family Suites consist of two en suite bedrooms, a family room with dining area, satellite TV and DVD player, and a guest bathroom. The most luxurious of the suites is the Forest Suite, which has a separate dining room, lounge, butler's kitchen, and private swimming pool.

  • On to Hunter's Country House in Plett. I thought I was back in the Cotswold region of England and that is all good! It is a beautiful spot and our room was exquisite; I didn't realize at first that it was not a standard, but rather a premium accommodation. There were very few guests when we were there. Their breakfast was quite under whelming and Storms River which was memorable. We have visited many, many of our own national parks here in the USA and have always enjoyed the experience. Additionally we went to which surprised me. Roxy in the front office was amazing! We walked to all their other properties knowing that Rosalie and Milt had stayed at Tsala; we popped into Zinzi's and looked at their menu and decided to eat dinner there our second night. Actually, we preferred the food as well as the ambiance there; the dining room at Hunter's is a little too formal and a bit pretentious. Having all three options in one place is terrific; they are three stunning venues. From there we spent the better part of one day in Tsitsikama, Buffels Bay, a wonderful beach, and Monkeyland. I thought the latter would be very touristy but I was wrong; both Ray and I loved it and found it to be very informative. The people at Hunter's recommended Old Nicks, a lovely little shopping area with terrific merchandise. Unfortunately, Ray is not very patient when it comes to shopping!

  • Though the atmosphere here was considerably more formal (especially for dinner in the evening), the staff was very considerate and accommodating. They had upgraded the boys to a cottage like our own and they were very beautiful indeed.
