Millions of years ago, a pre-historic volcano created a crater complex within the Erongo Mountains in Namibia. Today, this area is strewn with dazzling granite boulders that are jaw-dropping in size and breath-taking in age. The Erongo Mountain Lodge is set within this gargantuan game of geological marbles: 10 perfectly formed suites and a 2-tent family unit that offer crystal-clear air, spectacular views, intriguing San rock art and peaceful pitstop on the journey to or from Etosha National Park.
The 200 000 hectare Erongo Mountain Nature Conservancy is home to a roll call of exotically named avian life that will have twitchers all aflutter: like hundreds of rosy-faced lovebirds, Verreaux eagles, Damara red-billed hornbills, Hartlaub spur fowl and violet-backed wood hoopoes. Hikers and ramblers are in for a similar embarrassment of riches: there are three guided walks in which experts take you on an exciting exploration of this unusual wilderness and other self-guided trails that will wend you through these majestic boulders.
The spacious tented chalets are sensitively designed to echo the landscape, with wide timber viewing decks to greet every morning and walk-in showers in the en suite bathrooms hewn from the rock face. It is rare to say that you have found a place where time stands still: owner-managed Erongo is a strong contender, with a quiet majesty all of its own.
