overview

Built high up on the Nyoni Rocks on which the Zulu commanders stood to direct the Battle of Isandlwana, Isandlwana Lodge overlooks the enigmatic Isandlwana Mountain and historic battle site below, where the British Army faced one of its worst defeats on the morning of the 22 January 1879. Built of thatch and stone with huge wooden columns supporting floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the lodge is decorated with a combination of traditional and modern styles.

Visit the friendly local Zulu people and learn about their fascinating culture or hear stories of the historical battle. Explore the area on a game safari, as the lodge is also in short driving distance to several game reserves, such as Umfolozi and Hluhluwe, boasting the Big 5. Isandlwana offers many exciting exclusive daytrips. For something truly memorable, explore a horseback trail with an experienced rider-guide or grab your binoculars and go on a birding-walking tour to see over 70 species of bird.

Traveller Reviews

  • We also loved Islandwana Lodge, once I got used to the very steep drive. The staff there were also friendly and helpful and around to help push me up and down the many slopes. It is a fantastic location being build into the cliff. The view is great and being in the middle of the village again makes it real. Rob's talks and tours of the battlefield and Rorke's Drift were great and the Zulu children from the village came up and did a display of dancing for us. We also went to Blood River and back to Talana.

  • This is a superb venue on all accounts! The staff, led by Robin, was as good as any we have ever encountered. Rob Gerrard is a treasure. His battlefield talks bring the events to life, and I believe that our two tours with him will be the most remembered events of this trip.

  • Isandlwana was amazing - one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The lodge is beautifully designed, the rooms, food, hospitality and tours were all fantastic.
