The Spier Hotel, just outside Stellenbosch, dates back to 1692 and has been meticulously renovated and restored. These gracious Cape Dutch buildings are located in scenic surroundings in the Cape Winelands. The hotel is an ideal retreat for families, with a range of exciting activities on offer to keep every member of the family suitably entertained.

Relax beside the various swimming pools, stroll around the beautiful gardens or enjoy a picnic on the rolling green lawns. You can also appreciate the extensive collection of locally-made art which can be seen in both the rooms and communal living areas. Other activities include horse-riding through the vineyards, swimming, playing a round of golf, or even visiting the on-site Eagle Encounters.

The beautifully landscaped gardens that surround the hotel and stretch to the wine estate are a wonderful place for quiet walks, a relaxed picnic or an exciting game of tag with the children.

Eagle Encounters is situated on Spier's grounds and houses many birds of prey, and provides the chance to have personal encounters with owls, eagles and falcons.

Dining

Situated on a top-class wine estate, you'll have a range of public restaurants to choose from at Spier, all of which offer excellent cuisine and beautiful views. Moyo is by far the most spectacular and popular restaurant.

This outdoor dining experience captures the essence of African culture and is situated in a tree-dotted garden.

Dining spaces are beneath unique gazebos and in romantic tree houses. Live performers will entertain you with indigenous theatre, dance, opera, and traditional storytelling from noon until late.

Spier's newest restaurant, Eight, is a farm-to-table eating experience, offering organic produce from the local surrounds and a harmonious environment in which to enjoy healthy, hearty food.

You can also visit the Spier Deli & Grill where you can fill up your picnic basket with fresh breads and cheeses and relax beside the lake or under the trees on the lawn.

Standard Room

Rooms at the Spier Hotel are divided into Standard Rooms, Superior Rooms and Suites, and are all set in a peaceful village atmosphere. The spacious and elegant rooms are decorated to include a hint of Africa in an artistic way and feature modern amenities, including air conditioning, ceiling fans, tea and coffee making facilities, and toy boxes for kids.

The Standard Rooms are spacious and feature artworks from the comprehensive Spier Art Collection that accentuates the elegant simplicity of these rooms. Each room is individually appointed, and has large, comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms with both a bath and a shower. These rooms boast a quiet, country atmosphere and each have a shaded outdoor patio that is ideal for a late afternoon glass of wine.

Other Room Types

The 10 Superior Rooms are ideal for the discerning traveller as guests can enjoy exquisite decor and special services. With all the amenities of the Standard Rooms, these rooms also have a fully stocked mini bar that is ideal for private entertaining. Access to Spier's Wi-Fi service and a daily paper delivered to your room are free of charge and you'll have the added luxury of gazing over the Eerste River from the comfort of your room.

The four Suites offer exclusive, individualised living. Each one is decorated by a local artist and is a unique masterpiece on its own. All the suites face the Eerste River as well as the Helderberg Mountains, and two of them walk out into the gardens with huge wooden outdoor divans to relax on.

  • The Speir was nice too, but we arrived there late at night and left the next morning so I can't comment to much on the property itself. But the cheetah place and bird encounters was great. And we did have dinner that night up in a tree. So lovely!!

  • Our stay at Spier was brief but very nice. Our friends met us again as soon as we arrived and took us to a market and the Waterford winery. What a special place! We came back to Spier and had dinner at Moyo on the grounds and it was another highlight of our trip. For some reason "Morroco" comes to mind. We didn't get to spend much time in our room, but it was beautiful, and the wake up call at 3:30 am came way too soon.
