overview

Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountain range and overlooking the infamous battlefield of Spioenkop, Three Tree Hill Lodge was opened to coincide with the centenary of the Anglo Boer War. Set on the former site of a British military headquarters, the lodge has been constructed mainly from wood and iron to resemble the housing kits that were brought out from Britain in the 19th century.

It is of course the amazing story of the Battle of Spioenkop in 1900 that will be the focal point of your stay; guests will enjoy an introductory talk on the origins of the Boer War and the Natal campaign. Explore the other battlefields in the region with the lodge's expert guide or take a guided walk, horse ride, or mountain biking excursion into the foothills of the Drakensberg. The nearby Spioenkop Game Reserve affords guests the chance to spot a range of animals that includes rhino, giraffe and zebra.

Traveller Reviews

  • We specially enjoyed Three Trees Hill Lodge : The lodge in itself, beautiful location, amazing food but mainly great owners who really give a special warm atmosphere to the place.

    Sophie Gavalda, May 2014
  • My favorite lodge was Three Tree Hill Lodge where the staff is so friendly and the overall atmosphere just perfect for us.

    Bertrand Meyer, November 2013
  • Three Tree Hill is under new management by Simon and Cheryl who were also very helpful and have made a suite available near Reception since we were last there and put in a ramp so it was easier to get to the Dining/Verandah area. We had an excellent day out with Simon to Elandslaagte and Colenso, he made the battles come alive. David did a walk in the game reserve with Cheryl whilst I lunged on the verandah with a book and watched the weaver birds building nests.

    Marjorie Needham, October 2013
  • The Spionkop Three Trees Lodge was very good and an excellent suggestion - we wanted more time there as it was so good and the food and hospitality excellent.

    Iain Cockin, July 2009
  • Simon and Cheryl are exceptional hosts and even take guests for walks in the afternoon, to view the wild life. Food very good, friendly staff, laundry done free of charge. Accommodation comfortable.

    Ian Stirling, April 2009
  • At Three Trees in Spionkop we saw giraffe and rhinos from the terrace outside our room.

    Lillian Choy, September 2008
