Harking back to the days of polished brass, fine crystal and silver service, the Royal Livingstone not only has an enviable view of and private access to the spray of Victoria Falls but also immaculate grounds and a gracious approach to hosting guests. From the imposing foyer and bar filled with fine cognacs to the zebras grazing peacefully on the lawns, this is a place to spoil yourself and your loved ones for a special occasion like an anniversary or honeymoon.

An easy 2-hour flight from Johannesburg in South Africa, the Royal Livingstone offers the plushest accommodation in Africa’s adventure capital. By day, head out white-water rafting on the Zambezi River, abseiling down Batoka Gorge, bungee jumping or walking with lions; by night, enjoy a Pimm’s on the waterside terrace before savouring perfectly-cooked Zambezi bream and sinking into your ultra-comfortable king-sized bed.

Keen golfers can tackle the course and have a refreshing drink in the clubhouse after their 18 holes. The Royal Livingstone also offers guests a spa and beauty salon as well as two gyms and a large swimming pool with river views. Whatever ever it is you feel like doing, the concierge and your private butler will be on hand – leave the ‘admin’ to them and make the most of your time at ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, the Smoke that Thunders.

Within the 17 colonial-style buildings that make up The Royal Livingstone lie facilities to cater for guests’ relaxation and fitness needs. Two separate gyms host weight training, circuit training and body sculpting in one, and aerobics and karate in the other. The golf course has its own private clubhouse where light lunches can be enjoyed, while drinks are also served around the enormous, classically rectangular pool that is surrounded by comfortable sun loungers – the perfect place for a de-stressing foot massage.

The Royal Spa offers a comprehensive range of cleansing and balancing treatments using top-quality Dermalogica and Clarins products. Choose from the massage menu and unwind in the privacy of a cool gazebo set up on the banks of the Zambezi River or opt for a rejuvenating session in the comfort of your room.

The Royal Livingstone also provides myriad other services such a butler assigned to your room, laundry, babysitting and shoe polishing. The concierge will be able to assist you with activities and transfers around Victoria Falls and Livingstone, from casting for tiger fish in the Zambezi River to powering through grade 4 rapids.

As a guest, you will have unlimited access to the Victoria Falls via the hotel’s exclusive entrance. Follow the pathway through the rainforest that runs along the edge of the river and watch in awe as the broad flow of the Zambezi plummets over the precipice and crashes into the gorge deep below to create the world’s largest sheet of falling water.

There are exquisite dining locations dotted throughout the Royal Livingstone’s manicured estate. On the aptly-named Sun Deck and on the verandah on the edge of the lawn, enjoy chilled drinks, light bites and gourmet barbeque while gazing out over the shimmering waters of the life-giving Zambezi River. If your luck is in, you may even spot a herd of elephants crossing the river, the adults protecting the little ones while the leader finds the safest passage.

In the late afternoon, revive with a classic high tea – the table laden with dainty cakes and pop-in-your-mouth savouries – or a perfectly-mixed G ‘n T in The Lounge to the accompaniment of live piano music. The atmosphere is redolent of David Livingstone’s adventures in Africa, with hand-painted maps marking his intrepid journey.

The Royal Livingstone Dining Room is a perfect bookend to your day; glimpse impala or zebras wandering past the windows as you tuck into breakfast, lunch or dinner. The à la carte menu effortlessly fuses European classics with notes of Africa and India. A must-have is the Zambezi bream, oven-roasted whole with just a touch of salt and pepper.

The Livingstone Bar is one of the most gracious on the continent, its high wooden shelves stocked with excellent cognacs and whiskies for a well-deserved nightcap.

Should you prefer to spend a night in front of your TV or on your private balcony, order from the 24-hour room service menu.

Traveller Reviews

  • It was overwhelming. The scenery, the rooms, the garden, everything was perfect. And the kids sleeping in the Zambezi Sun was a super combination

    Hans Helmreich, September 2014
  • Royal Livingstone was beautiful and a nice last stop on our trip. The first afternoon in Livingstone we just went down to the falls. The second day we went to the Mukuni lion walk in the morning, then to Livingstone Island and Angel's Pool which was amazing, and then we went to the bridge for bungee swing in the late afternoon.

    Sabina Mehra, July 2014
  • Arriving at the Royal Livingstone was so exciting! The view was breathtaking. This was definitely the nicest hotel I have ever been to. Again, everyone was so welcoming and everything was so well thought out. Our rooms and the hotel as a whole were beautiful. We went on the river cruise and loved getting to watch the sunset on the Zambezi. Then we went to the bar at the Zambezi Sun to listen to live music. It was great that was within walking distance. We definitely were never bored. My personal favorite part of the trip was hiking Victoria Falls. I feel extremely blessed to have gotten to see such an amazing work of God so close up! Leaving the Royal Livingstone was tough but the Chobe Game Lodge definitely did not disappoint.

    David Hackney, July 2014
  • The amenities at the Royal Livingstone were great - from the hand massage at check-in to the glass enclosed work-out room, all with a butler and a view of the falls!!!

    Lynn Thomas, July 2014
  • Well this is another phenomenal hotel. Doing the river safari and lunch on Livingstone island. Already been on the helicopter!!!!!!

    James Cumming, June 2014
  • Our journey ends at the Victoria Falls at Zambian site. Another lovely country, and a very special Hotel and perfect service (Royal Livingstone). Many partners from different countries and companies were worked in a harmony which we could not expect that promptness even in Europe, but we were in Africa !!! After a romantic sun dawn cruise on Zambezi river and an Elephant ride, it was very hard for us to finish our legendary journey and turn back to home and return to our jobs

    Ibrahim Erol Nalcaci, June 2014
  • Livingstone in our view was not in the same class as Sun City's Palace of the Lost City but the Victoria Falls was a first for me and i stood in the rain forest and exhilarated in the misty shower as the temperature was 38 degrees.

    Birgit Vogl, May 2014
  • We all had an amazing time, Livingstone was surreal, the hotel fantastic and everything you arranged was first class.

    Melanie Maxwell, May 2014
  • Livingstone is as good as it gets. I will go back there any time. Professional, efficient and above all very presentable plus having wild zebras wandering around at breakfast is something that we are not going to forget in hurry. Victoria Falls awesome natural wonder. Seeing it from Microlight was breathtaking. Additional trips we have done were organised with minimum effort plus Christmas dinner not to be missed for anyone who is travelling in this period of time. Hotel highly recommended.

    Marek Tarnowski, January 2014
  • Hotels we stayed were fantastic. Loved the Royal Livingstone! It was not too kid friendly, but we managed…and besides the Zambezi Sun hotel which is a part of the same property is available. My children loved the pool at Zambezi Sun better. The property also has some animals like Zebras, impalas, velvet monkeys and giraffes which is a huge plus to amuse children.
