Facilities

At Matemwe Lodge, you may want to do nothing except soak up the sun beside the pool or in your hammock with a cocktail from the bar.

If you are feeling active however then there are a selection of day activities to choose from: discover the Mnemba Atoll with its famous reef and fascinating underwater world on diving and snorkelling excursions (there is an on-site diving centre) or use the complimentary kayaks and explore the turquoise waters under your own steam.

There is internet access at Matemwe and guests can also visit a local village and learn about Zanzibar culture, pamper themselves with massages and spa treatments or set off for a day trip around Zanzibar - all of which are easily arranged by Matemwe's staff.

Dining

Matemwe's restaurant is designed to maximise the view of the ocean and the fishermen who head out at breakfast, and then return at lunch. A cosy lounge area though provides refuge from bad weather, and dinner could be served al fresco around the pool under the palms if the weather is nice.

Fresh fish is a speciality at the lodge and is combined with fresh local produce to create a fine dining experience. Lunch is a selection of buffet-style African and European dishes while dinner includes meat, fish and vegeterian options. Before a meal, don't forget to enjoy a delicious cocktail at the poolside bar.

Luxury Suite

Matemwe Lodge offers 12 Luxury Suites, each with a king-size bed and mosquito-net plus an en suite bathroom consisting of a large bath and walk-in shower.

Each suite is set in a beautiful garden and features a private veranda complete with a hammock and couch from which to soak up the sun and ocean views.

Traveller Reviews

  • We liked Matemwe because of its situation and the village life of the fishermen nearby as well although it is no perfect situation for swimming because of the tide and the reef and some pollution of the beach . The sand is like white powder and extraordinary and the water is clear. We did not go further by boat as we get easily seasick recently. Zanzibar Stone Town is a interesting multicultural place and we liked both tours. All accommodations met our expectations and the staff was very friendly everywhere.

  • A great place to relax. The bungalows itself was great with its veranda over the water. Truly amazing. Just sitting there, listening to the sounds of the water was very calming.
