Traveller Reviews

  • Chapunga Lodge at Thornybush was, by far, the highlight of the trip. The staff was absolutely amazing they did everything necessary to make sure that our stay there was everything that we were looking for. We got to experience a family of elephants walking through our camp at about 22h30 while we were at the bar having drinks. We saw all of the Big 5 and walked away with some amazing pictures. The camp is definitely not for those who are afraid of bugs. We are definitely happy that we were able to stay in Chapunga. While their bar and outdoor eating area had a superior view, the intimacy of only 16 guests really made Chapunga special.

  • Much better at Chapungu. Very high standard. Everything was right. Very friendly staff, very knowledgeable trackers again with good sense of humour (must be South Afrikan thing). Seep looked after us and made us laugh on safari rides. He deserves a medal. Yes we saw big 5 and that on first day. It was great, lodge was great, tent was good, food was very good, bar had everything and above all everyone very friendly and helpful. I am very impressed.

  • We LOVED the safari and the lodge you picked for us. The food and people and game drives were amazing and we had a great experience.

  • Chapungu: also great place. We were a bit skeptical about the “tented” part of the accommodation, but it did not have a negative impact, although I mentioned two improvement points: they could place a transparent awning on the perimeter of the balcony, one of those that roll down, so that when they come to turn down the beds, close the blinds, they could also roll down the awning to reduce the cold wind that inevitably gets in the room and makes it quite cold at night, even with the hot air-co on. In other words, should one need to use the toilet and have to get out of the heated bed, one will feel cold. The other point is the lighting: I think they should have a bit of a stronger head light so that one can read, for instance. On the other hand, all the other aspects were great: Kristie, the manager is an adorable lady and one can see that she has the strongest leadership skills to motivate the whole staff on making the guests comfortable and welcome. Everyone, without exception has been great to us. On top of all, our ranger Sipps and the tracker Oscar made a great team. I have noticed how they really went the extra mile to make sure we would see all the game (luck and their skills allowed us to see 4 of the Big 5 in the very first safari), and on top of that we saw: lions mating, lionesses with cubs, a lion eating a catch that it snatched from a Cheetah that we also saw. We saw a leopard with a cub and a catch; giraffes, elephants, hippos, rhinos, croc, buffalos, night owl, porcupine… summarizing, we saw many things.

  • Chapungu - great facility. Loved it. I would highly recommend it. Staff was very attentive and they provided a great experience. Tents were great too. Can't say enough good things about it. The meal experience and food were both outstanding. Our Ranger was Micah and Tracker was Aubrey - they were great and both very skilled at tracking the animals and finding good game. Drives were always exciting and productive with recurring sightings of the Big 5 as well as many others.

  • Chapungu Tented Camp was very welcoming and I liked it for being smaller and accommodating. The food was fantastic. The animals around our tent were great to see. The guides/trackers were great and we went on a morning walking safaris that were very interesting.

  • On to Chapungu...we arrived at the Hoedspruit Airport and were promptly greeted by our transfer, which was very good. I can not say enough to describe how much we loved this part of our trip. Immediately upon arrival we were greeted and felt so welcomed. The grounds are so beautiful and casual. Our tent was nice, rustic, and had such a great "authenticity" about it. The staff is amazing. So friendly, accommodating, and helpful. Our guide Gearhart was wonderful and so knowledgeable and friendly. We LOVED the schedule...5:30 am-9:30 game drive, breakfast after, and then a break from 11-2:30, lunch, and game drive again from 3:30-7:30, then drinks at 8 and dinner at 8:30. It was great to have a break in the middle of the day to cool off and spend some time resting and relaxing, but the game drives were plenty long and we saw TONS of animals, including all of the Big 5. And the food was some of the best food I've ever had, so delicious I get a little teary eyed thinking about it. Mealtimes were something to be excited about. We really enjoyed getting to know some of the other guests as well since we all sat together at meals and were together during game drives. And some nights the staff also joined us for dinner which was great because we were able to learn more about the lodge and animal conservation and what it's like to live in South Africa. Not only was it a great way to see amazing animals, but I really thought it gave us the opportunity to learn more about the culture and people and I am very thankful for that aspect as well. I would recommend Chapungu to ANYONE and if we ever decided to go back to South Africa it would certainly appear on the agenda again. We were just so pleased with this part of our trip.
