overview

Serengeti Sopa Lodge is located in the Nyarboro Hills in the south-west of the Serengeti National Park. A large amount of game can be seen in close proximity to the lodge, thanks to the year-round water and surrounding acacia woodland. To make the most of your safari experience, Serengeti Sopa Lodge offers a variety of game drives, as well as hot air balloon rides which offer a spectacular vantage point.

Visit the Cradle of Mankind, where early man first made an appearance approximately 2 million years ago. Alternatively the swimming pool invites you to cool off from the heat of the African sun and the main areas provide a relaxing place to take in the magnificent views. Children are very welcome at the lodge; babysitting services are available as are children’s meal, high chairs and cots.

Serengeti. The 6 hour drive to the Serengeti was interesting, including the visit to a Masai Village just outside the Serengeti boundary. One note, the prices of the crafts for sale in the village were London prices, and while negotiating was possible, they were not particularly flexible. Example, the asking price for a small beaded bowl was about US$ 40… and only slightly lower after negotiation. We understand the ‘free market’, and maybe that tactic works for them, but it was awkward to have to return many items to their rack when negotiations broke down. We would have bought more if the prices were reasonable. For reference, the same bowls were available for about US$ 5 at the Serengeti gift shop a few miles ahead. Our Guide/Hassan did warn us, however. We were taken by the enthusiasm of school children in the small one-room school behind the village. The Sopa Serengeti Lodge was our favorite lodge. The room was excellent with a superb view. The staff, especially the restaurant staff was the best, and they also doubled as entertainers for an evening show. Our waiter, Frank, had an especially winning personality, and was the head drummer as well. The full-day game drive was outstanding. We completed our ‘big-five’ with a sighting of a leopard and her two cubs. Another highlight was the close-up and personal encounter with two male Cheetahs, who laid down in the shade under our Land Cruiser…couldn’t have been staged better! The other highlight was the migration in the Southern Serengeti… our timing was right on. The number of Wildebeest on the move probably tripled during our 3 day stay. So, we were especially pleased that early December proved to be an excellent time to view the southward migration in that area.

  • The lodges we stayed at were all really nice. We weren't exactly sure what to expect, but we liked every place we stayed (in particular, our rooms in the Sopa Lodges in Tanzania were great). The food and service was excellent and far exceeded our expectations.

  • Every camp was amazing, especially Serengeti Sopa. The view was awesome and was a great end to the the day after long game drives. The food, as well as the variety, was brilliant and I never had a bad meal.

  • The Serena and Sopa Lodges were very nice and the food was superb.

  • Our drive through the Serengeti on our way to Sopa was action packed. We were mock-charged by an elephant basking in a waterhole then 5 minutes later watched a family of baboons fighting with a leopard on the rocks. What an amazing place. Sopa Lodge was in a great oasis in the vastness of the Serengeti. Although not as intimate and homely as the tented camps, it was very comfortable. The staff were really lovely and the food excellent. Nothing could beat the view though of giraffe's munching at the trees outside our rooms!
