The beautiful Elephant House lies just beyond Addo Elephant National Park, which offers some of the best elephant viewing in the world. The Park is home to more than 300 elephants, as well as buffalo, black rhinos, antelope, zebra and many species of bird. This luxury colonial-style lodge offers warm, personalised service and a family-friendly environment.

The thatched roofed farmhouse is only 8km from Addo, where not only magnificent elephants may be spotted but also lion, black rhino, buffalo, hyena, jackal and a variety of antelope and bird. Choose to experience this area on your own or go on guided game drives with the in-house field guide. Other activities include visits to the Born Free Foundation and a traditional village, wine tours, horse riding, polo, and a helicopter trip to an unspoiled beach.

Head out on game drives in the Addo Elephant National Park and enjoy some of the best elephant viewing in the world, or explore the beautiful area on a guided walk.

For something a little more exciting, go quad biking, or set off into the Zuurberg Mountains for a hike.

Select from a range of other exciting activities in the area; go on a memorable day trip to Shamwari, play a round of golf at a nearby golf course, try an elephant or horseback safari, cane on the Sundays River, experience a breathtaking helicopter trip, or a fascinating cultural, historical and agricultural tour in Sunday River Valley.

Return from a day of activity and cool off at one of two swimming pools, before choosing a tranquil spot in the garden to unwind with a delicious cocktail from the bar.

Colonial Room

Elephant House offers seven Colonial Bedrooms that are charmingly decorated with antique furniture, Persian rugs, and extra-length king-sized beds.

All bedrooms feature private verandas, stylish en suite bathrooms, outdoor showers, air conditioning, central heating, a telephone, dial-up internet, a hairdryer, fluffy bathrobes, a safe, and a view of either the lovely garden or the pool.

Other Room Types

The Standard Colonial Family Cottage accommodates a maximum of 5 guests in two rooms with either double or twin beds. A Luxury Terrace Room combines two rooms and sleeps a maximum of 4 guests, with a shared balcony, en suite bathroom, and view over the garden.

  • Elephant House. We LOVED it. We actually preferred it over Shamwari for ambiance. My sister in law had a most beautiful room. We were in the annex - nice as well, but for me a little difficult as I have broken my ankle some months before and still could not walk well, especially not over loss stone chippings. But the staff were great, food good and the place itself made us feel at home. (My husband and I have lived in Africa for many years and it had a homely feeling). Obviously in luxury it could not compete with Shamwari, but as I said the ambiance was pleasant.
