Expect a friendly and welcoming atmosphere at The Desert Homestead, situated in a wide grassy valley sheltered by rugged mountain ranges and with views of the distant dunes of the Namib Desert. Situated about 30km south-east of Sesriem - gateway to the sand dunes of Sossusvlei - the Homestead is well-placed for travellers on a Namibian desert safari.

And a stay here is all about experiencing the desert and discovering its secrets: you can choose between several horse-back options - including desert sleep-outs - on the lodge's easy-to-handle horses or a leisurely nature drive that culminates in sundowner gin and tonics and snacks with a view. Excursions to Sossusvlei, adventure activities and game viewing are also offered.

Facilities

The living areas of the main lodge are all open-plan and create a feeling of freedom and space. The cosy lounge has ethnic African finishes and comfortable leather sofas. Satellite TV and internet access are available and the bar is a popular place for guests to gather and swap desert stories.

The swimming pool in front of the main building is good for a refreshing dip and is well utilised throughout the year. There are many activities on offer at

The Desert Homestead including horse-back safaris, game drives, sundowner drives and excursions to the sand dunes of Sossusvlei. Quad biking, hot-air balloon trips and scenic helicopter flights can also be arranged.

Dining

The Desert Homestead offers creative farm-style cuisine with fresh vegetables from the desert gardens. The most prominent feature of the Desert Homestead is the well-sheltered veranda which provides the perfect setting for a leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner - candlelit even on windy evenings.

Standard Room

Accommodation at The Desert Homestead is offered in rustic thatched chalets, set between the main lodge and the open grassland and at a discreet distance from each other. These 20 en suite chalets are all luxuriously decorated in pale linens and dark wood "riempie" furniture.

The chalets feature large single or double beds and en suite bathrooms with showers. The lights and fans are powered by a bank of wind and solar-powered batteries and all the lodge's soaps, shampoo and body lotions are environmentally friendly.
