overview

Under two hours from Cape Town, Birkenhead House offers both the drama of the world's best land-based whale watching and the luxury of an exquisite seaside hotel. Its location in Hermanus on the cliffs that overlook the beaches of Walker Bay makes Birkenhead House the ideal base from which to explore this scenic area.

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy during your stay. Hermanus offers access to golf courses, horseback excursions, fishing, bird watching and hikes along the coast or the fynbos-covered mountains. The pièce de résistance of the area is of course whale watching, which runs from July to November, peaking in September, and with a selection of award-winning beaches right on your doorstep, you can enjoy as much time on the beach as your heart desires.

Traveller Reviews

  • It was fantastic. It always seems to me that hotels which keep the same staff year after year are doing something right. It's like visiting friends when we return to our favourite haunts!

    Lindsay Southgate, February 2012
  • Birkenhead House was a delight; incredible service, gorgeous views, wonderful food/wine, and we were treated like stars. Really nothing was too much for them, and this is possibly the most wonderful little hotel we've ever stayed in.

    Kate Painchaud, October 2009
  • Thr staff were beyond superior! Their friendliness and helpfulness were just awesome. I would return just to stay at those two places! Accommodations at both were equally as deluxe.

    Bela De Pontes, April 2008
