Dining

The freshest herbs and vegetables, homegrown in the Lodge's own kitchen garden, compliment a menu designed to satisfying discerning palates. Hearty and nourishing, without ostentation or fussiness, the kitchen serves tender meat and fresh fish dishes, complemented with a tempting spread of salads and superb vegetarian options.

To balance such wholesomeness, a memorable selection of desserts and cheeses complete each feast. Meals are served in the comfortable, open-air dining area overlooking the hippo-filled river. By prior arrangement, guests may dine in the wild proper, taking breakfast, sundowners or dinner alongside the Talek River.

Standard Tent

Each of the 10 classic safari tents provides a secluded sanctuary with a  deck overlooking a private view of the tumbling Talek River. Every tent is a feast for the senses with hand-carved mahogany furnishings, richly textured fabrics and delightful details, such as historic prints and antique chests.  The en suite bathroom offers every modern amenity, including a shower, twin basins and flushing toilet. The open air, Victorian claw-foot bathtub is a triumph - allowing guests the singular experience of game viewing from a bubble bath.

Seven tents offer enormous double beds and the remaining three offer twin beds. Every tent includes radio communications, complementary insect repellent and mineral water, and a personal attendant available 24-hours per day. Traveller Reviews

  • The accommodations were above standard. The tent and bathroom facilities were very clean, and aesthetically pleasing. The view from our tent overlooking the Talek River, including hippos, was exceptional. The food and staff were great. Our guide, Paul Kiroi, was excellent! The Mara Explorer is definitely worth a revisit!

  • The Mara Explorer camp was out of this world - pure luxury, but with a true safari experience. The food was amazing, as was the accommodation and the game drive guide.

    Jill Arnold, September 2008
  • That was the dream camp we had our hearts set on, decided we couldn't afford, but now agree that, as part of your package, it's fate and went for it! With just 10 tents AND the verandas AND the open to the night sky design of the tents, how could we say no?

    Dr Rosemary Hrinko, September 2008
  • A very good place. Excellent runned by Mariana, and a very serviceminded staff. Very good accomodation and perfectly placed in the Mara. Lots of animals (all of them).

    Mik Koehler, January 2008
