Set on 6.5 acres of tranquil gardens and palm trees on the north-east coast of Zanzibar, the Ocean Paradise Resort is well-named indeed. And the tranquility doesn't end with the location: relax in the cool simplicity of your room with its East African influence and traditional thatched roof. Activities abound at this luxury resort.

You can choose from a long list of watersports such as windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and scuba diving or stay on dry land as you play beach volleyball, billiards and table tennis. Away from the coast, you can also join one of the many excursions to see Zanzibar's sights such as a spice plantation, Jozani Forest or historic Stone Town - all easily done in a day.

For the diving enthusiast, the Ocean Paradise Resort has a PADI-accredited dive company on the property who will be happy to organise a fantastic scuba diving excursion for you.

There is also a dedicated office at the resort which can easily arrange a wide variety of tours for you: choose from a Spice Island excursion, a tour of historic Stone Town or a visit to Jozani Forest - or perhaps all three.

The Ocean Paradise Resort has the largest swimming pool in Zanzibar, designed with a stunning waterfall feature.

Dining

Situated two floors up, the Ocean Restaurant offers panoramic views over the resort and the sparkling Indian Ocean beyond. A sumptuous breakfast spread of freshly baked goodies, local fruits and juices plus traditional cooked dishes starts the day while the mood changes in the evening with soft candlelight accompanying the extensive themed buffet which changes daily. The Jahazi Restaurant with its great location by the pool serves up a variety of snacks and wood-fired pizzas, and the menu also offers an à la carte selection of international and authentic Zanzibari dishes. Set down by the beach, the Mawimbi Restaurant specialises in a delicious mix of Zanzibar flavours and international cuisine. The restaurant's beachfront setting makes it a perfect spot for a romantic candle-lit dinner.

Superior Garden Room

Accommodation at the Ocean Paradise Resort consists of 100 traditional, makuti-thatched African roundhouses. Some rooms are positioned on a rise on the escarpment while others are set closer to the beach in a large palm grove but decor and amenities are common to all.

The rooms are fully air-conditioned and decorated in a tribal African style with comfortable twin or king-sized beds draped with a mosquito net. Facilities include satellite TV and radio, direct dial telephone, a mini-bar and a unique curved en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet.

  • Yes, the trip was fantastic overall. The positives included that the hotel was beautiful, the food was delicious (both breakfast and dinner), and the staff were very friendly. Some of the staff even learnt my name, which was very impressive. The pool area was very nice and the fenced-in beach area was much appreciated. It was a great place for a single female traveler to go alone. Zanzibar was a beautiful place.

  • Hmmm well I don't think you could find a better place that was paradise! We had room 176 which was the first of the joined rooms right near reception so overlooked the pool and out to the see and was just heaven. The air con was a definate life saver and our room was so big it felt like a suite! The service was fantastic and the food delicious. The pool was the best I'd ever seen and the sea was stunning. We spent hours just walking along the beach. Our final morning we were very sad to be leaving. But alas more money needs to be earnt so that we can afford to go again.
