Set in a 500 000 acre private concession of the Okavango Delta, Abu Camp lies at the heart of a pristine wilderness and is surrounded by the open floodplains, island sanctuaries and papyrus-fringed channels that make this part of Botswana unique. The stars of the show, however, are the members of Abu's resident elephant herd. Interact with these gentle giants as you walk or ride with them and then spend time feeding, bathing or even swimming with them.

Elephants are reflected everywhere at the spectacularly stylish Abu Camp, from charming ornaments placed at the tubs to carved elephants on the dinner tabe, but there's plenty of the real stuff out there too. Get close to the area's abundant wildlife on dawn or late afternoon game drives, a perfect way to maximise your photographic opportunities. A guided nature walk or silent mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) ride through the channels will bring the smaller delights of Africa to your attention.

For guests under 17, there are the many delights of the Bush Buddy programme, which is overseen by a trained member of staff and includes age-appropriate activities, menus and gifts.

Abu Camp's large, airy lounge tent is the perfect place to relax on soft and comfortable chairs in the beautiful sitting area. There is also a well-stocked and peaceful library for some quiet reading time and a communications corner for keeping in touch with the outside world - all surrounded by a wide wrap-around deck with delightful views over the lagoon.

Spend a lazy afternoon around the swimming pool or enjoy the view while you work out in the gym. Your children will love being mentored into bush lore in the Bush Buddy programme. In addition to child-friendly magazines, snacks and welcome gifts, they will be able to play soccer or volleyball against the staff, learn to identify bird and animal calls, and even cook 'the bush way' by making pizza in a termite mound!

Traveller Reviews

  • We had the entire camp for the family, which made it very special. By far the most luxurious, and also extremely attentive staff. Game drives are not up to what Jao and Kings Camp could offer, but walking and riding the elephants made the difference. What a special feeling, sitting on top of this huge creature and feeling her anxiety if she notices something in the bush. We made maximum use of the ability to ride, since we stayed three nights (two nights would also have been ok). Every meal we could select two set table arrangements, one on deck and one more covered in the main building. Staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable - hot water bottles, etc in abundance.

  • Abu Camp was the cherry on the cake. We all LOVED it (I was a bit reluctant as I am quite afraid of elephants in the wild but I did not feel nervous for a minute). I would go back to Abu in a heartbeat. 3 Days is just too short! I will definitely be contacting you again to organise another trip there. On our last elephant safari Gregg proposed to Juliet (on bended knee atop the elephant) - she accepted and we are all thrilled!!!! It was such a lovely ending to a superb trip.
