Set on Mozambique's coast near the town of Vilanculos, Casa Rex is an intimate and charming boutique hotel offering sweeping views of the sparkling Indian Ocean and the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago in the distance. Winding footpaths lead through the hotel's tropical gardens to the beach and the swimming pool which overlooks glittering Vilanculos Bay. A lovely verandah and large indigenous trees add to the tranquil feel of the property and offer perfectly shaded corners to spend a relaxing afternoon. 

But there's plenty to do as well: browse the local market, stroll down to the beach or let the friendly staff help you organise one of the many activities on offer including scuba diving, dhow and catamaran sailing trips, snorkelling expeditions, deep-sea fishing, sunset cruises and full-day trips to the Bazaruto Islands with a barbecue lunch on the beach.

Facilities

The Casa Rex has two swimming pools, one near the hotel's dining area and the other by the Acacia block.

Diving expeditions and other water sports are available from a variety of dive and activity centres located nearby - Casa Rex staff will be happy to help you to find the best option.

Relax with a spa treatment from one of the visiting therapists before enjoying a sundowner drink on the terrace.

Dining

Casa Rex has an excellent à la carte restaurant, considered one of the best in town and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dishes are a combination of international, Mozambican and Portuguese dishes but the restaurant is most famous for its delicious seafood specialities like crab curry and peri-peri prawns.

Meals are served outside on the terrace allowing you to gaze out over the ocean to the Bazaruto Islands, set on the horizon some 30km away.

Premium Room

Casa Rex offers a variety of rooms which all have sea views, en suite bathrooms and balconies or verandahs.

We recommend the Premium Rooms as they are suitable for individual couples or families - two additional single beds or cots can be added to these rooms to accommodate children.

One Premium Room is equipped with a double bed, an en suite bath/shower, fans, mosquito nets and a terrace; the other Premium Room is furnished with three single beds and an en suite shower as well as fans, mosquito nets and a terrace.

Other Room Types

The Acacia Rooms (eight in total) offer either double beds in upstairs rooms or twin bedded rooms located downstairs. Amenities in the Acacia Rooms include internet connectivity, air conditioning, an en suite shower, fans, bar fridge and a balcony.

The four Courtyard Suites feature a double bed, en suite bath and shower, a sitting area with day bed, air conditioning and mosquito nets, a bar fridge and balcony. These suites can also comfortably accommodate two additional beds or cots for children.

The Honeymoon Suite is made up of a double bed, en suite shower and a private dressing area. Fans, mosquito nets, internet access and a large private terrace complete the list of facilities.

  • Case Rex was also great,The staff are very friendly, they have a great restaurant (crab curry was awesome!), the rooms were large and comfortable. It was a beautiful location, was great to sit by the pool or go for a stroll along the sand. We went out to the islands for a day and did some snorkelling which was fantastic.
