overview

Drenched in sunshine, Vamizi Island awaits you off Mozambique's tropical northern coast. A private retreat, this whale-shaped coral island is fringed with white sandy beaches that welcome breeding turtles each season. Its wild heart of indigenous bush is home to Samango monkeys, coconut crabs, butterflies and 112 bird species.

The Lodge welcomes families and honeymooners alike in its 13 romantic, timber villas scattered along a private beach. The staff includes wellness therapists who offer treatments such as reflexology and massage. In this barefoot paradise, the kitchen’s speciality is, of course, fresh seafood feasts.

Vamizi’s underwater wonderland teems with whales, dolphins, turtles, 400 fish species and cathedrals of Gregorian coral. Dive one of the world's top 10 sites, Neptune's Arm, in the care of PADI instructors. Spend your time in paradise at play in the ocean, relishing castaway picnics, strolling along untouched sands, and indulging in a little monkey-watching.

Facilities

The Lodge’s bar, lounge and deck offer loungers, swing beds and Swahili day beds from which to soak up the views. But why settle for lunch on the deck if you can catch a dhow to a deserted island picnic?

Dedicated to restoring your body, mind and soul to perfect harmony, the spa offers wellness therapies, including shiatsu, reiki and massage, along with the benefits of a resident yoga instructor. In addition to standard beauty treatments, Vamizi’s team has created some unique offerings: locally harvested seaweed masks and sea salt scrubs.

The Lodge offers a full range of toys for its island playground: kayaks, sailboats, and gear for snorkelling, diving and deep sea fishing.

Dining

The Lodge’s thatched, open-plan dining area is relaxed and intimate. The kitchen serves up a medley of tropical ingredients, Swahili flavours and freshly caught seafood. Sip on cocktails or fine wines from the bar, which are served throughout the Lodge’s communal areas.

Evening meals are little more glamorous, featuring star-lit seafood barbeques on the beach, or flamboyant dishes served by lantern light in the dining area. For a romantic, private feast, request dinner in your villa.

The Lodge has a second restaurant in the winter season called Muntu Nkulu, which is located on the south side of the island and serves delicious buffets.

Luxury Villa

Vamizi’s 13 timber villas are scattered along a private beach. Each one opens onto the beach via a sun deck, taking full advantage of the spectacular sunsets and sea views. Indulge your senses in the barefoot luxury of timber floors, generous proportions and tranquil interiors.

The design and decor reflect the Swahili coast’s rich history with African, Arabic and Italian influences. Your bed is large and comfortable, the furniture custom-made and inviting, and the bathroom’s marble shower adds a glamorous touch.

Wide doors and windows welcome a cooling ocean breeze, while the plump sofa beckons you to retreat and relax in the heat of the afternoon. The Villa’s thoughtful and practical touches create an idyllic home-from-home.

  • Where do I even start about Vamizi. Hands down, most of the most special places I've ever been. The staff is just wonderful (and fun to be around). Total relaxation.
