• Location: Kenya, Masai Mara
  • Type of Accommodation: Tented Camp
  • Comfort Level: Comfortable

Elephant Pepper Camp is a traditional bush safari camp shaded by a natural forest of ebony and elephant pepper trees, overlooking the Mara plains. Set away from other lodges, the camp offers modern comforts, evenings by the campfire, and dinner under the stars.

The spectacular annual migration of wildebeest and zebra is by no means the only feature of this World Heritage Site. The Masai Mara is home to enormous herds of plains game, big cats, and elephant as well as colourful birds, small game, riverine wildlife and beautiful scenery. Daily extended game drives in open-sided vehicles and guided bush walks make up your thrilling game-viewing experiences.

Elephant Pepper is unfenced (although there are 24-hour patrols by Maasai moran) and game is often spotted in camp. It is closed during the annual 'long rains' season from April to May.

Meals at Elephant Pepper Camp are prepared by chefs trained by the owners' family, and feature traditional northern Italian recipes blended with international and local favourites.

The main dining tent offers family-style dining with a self-service bar or enjoy bush breakfasts, sundowners, or a barbecue beside the campfire.

Dishes include homemade pasta, fresh salads, and pork spare ribs or beef fillet served with roast potatoes, topped off with excellent cheese from Brown's in Nairobi and cheesecake.

Safari Tent

Elephant Pepper Camp has eight very spacious canvas tents with en suite dressing rooms and bathrooms. Each tent has a view of the Masai Mara plains and the wildlife that saunters past.

There are two large honeymoon or family tents available, both of which feature private pit fireplaces for evenings under the stars and areas for private dining.

Please note that some of the tents still have classic safari bucket showers but a renovation project is underway to connect them to plumbed water.

The little extras set Elephant Pepper Camp apart. There are hammocks strung between the shady trees, hot-water bottles waiting in bed at night and tasteful touches of Kenya like traditional kikois and beaded accents. The tents have substantial brass fittings from India, including brass basins in the bathroom and brass ashtrays in the form of a lion's paw print.

Traveller Reviews

  • WOW! When we landed on the airstrip, we were greeted on the runway by a Maasai Giraffe! James our driver (AMAZING...fluent in over 7 languages, knowledgeable about all animals and people in the area, the best tracker and spotter in the Mara, kind and accommodating) met us at the plane and before we even got to camp we were surrounded by elephants, common zebras, giraffes, and we were lucky enough to see a leopard! Later on that evening, on our evening Game Drive, we saw lions with cubs AND a giraffe that had been born only minutes before we encountered it. And too many other animals to mention! All of our Game Drives in the Mara North were very thrilling, as there were animals galore! We enjoyed everything about Elephant Pepper Camp: Hosts: Patrick and Sophie, the morning and evening fires, game drives, food, tent, the Maasai people, and of course, the incredible animals EVERYWHERE. Even though we were a bit off season, it worked out great for us because the camps were not crowded, and we did not run into as many game vehicles as during the high season. The Sundowners and breakfasts and lunches in the Bush were a highlight of our game drives at both Joy's Camp and Elephant Pepper Camp!
