Rocktail Camp's comfortable accommodation is located a short walk from an incredibly beautiful and remote beach in kwaZulu-Natal, the sort of beach where your footprints are likely to be the only ones. Tucked away in a coastal forest, you are sure to see a variety of bird species from the private balcony of your tented suite let alone when you head off on a forest trail.

Perfect for families and couples who want equal shares of adventure and relaxation, Rocktail Camp is a great place to chill out after a safari in one of the nearby Big 5 reserves. You can socialise around the large swimming pool, which is located in the main area of the camp while the Rocktail Dive Centre lies adjacent it, enabling you to arrange excellent scuba diving and snorkelling trips where with luck you may spot whale sharks, turtles (both in season) and manta rays, depending on the prevailing currents and swell.

If you are feeling adventurous, explore the forest on one of the various forest walks which lead down to the shore. You can also enjoy a cultural visit to a sangoma (an isiZulu traditional healer) for an authentic African experience.

  • Luxurious tented camp in a secluded coastal forest
  • Set in a wildlife reserve & World Heritage Site
  • Superb diving & snorkelling in local marine reserve
  • Close to a huge, footprint-free beach
  • Ideal beach holiday destination for families & couples
  • Combines well with a KZN big game safari

The main camp consists of a large and comfortable lounge and bar area, a covered outdoor dining area and wrap-around wooden veranda that extends onto a raised viewing deck with beautiful views across the forest to the Indian Ocean.

There is also a wine cellar where you can choose the perfect accompaniment to your meal and a boutique for gifts for those at home.

The large swimming pool is ideal for lazy days with a good book while if you have brought the family along, you will be pleased to hear that there are plenty of activities to keep the youngsters occupied including a children’s playroom.

The PADI-accredited Dive Centre at the camp will organise exciting diving and snorkelling excursions and can also provide courses for beginner to advanced divers. Consult with them about the prevailing currents and size of the swell, which can powerful in this part of the Indian Ocean.

Traveller Reviews

  • Rocktail was an interesting and adventurous experience!

Eric van der Schueren, January 2016
  • We enjoyed Rocktail Beach very much. The only thing about Rocktail beach is the rather long way to the beach. We think the vegetarian food could be improved (be more balanced and thought out). However, staff, guides and trips were fantastic.

    Annemiek Vromans, August 2010
  • I have had one of the most exciting vacations of my life! We really had a good time. Rocktail Beach camp was really nice, especially due to the wonderful beach nearby.

  • The choices of accomodation were fantastic, i don't think we'll ever stay anywhere as nice again! I have to thank you also for recommending Rocktail, you were absolutley right to encourage us with that one. It was a bit of a pain to get to (it took us 5 hours) but definitley worth it. In our experience, places that are hard work to get to are always worth the effort! The service from staff were outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. The honeymoon tent was fab and was Phil's favourite and the diving was excellent.

  • I cannot fault one thing about our stay we had a fantastic time, the food was fantastic and staff were extremely friendly. One thing I really loved about the place was that tipping was very discrete. I found in a lot of places we stayed that everyone was waiting for a tip, but not Rocktail we never once felt this way and on leaving we had to ask where the tip box was as it was descretely put away. The manager was a great character and we had a few good nights with her, she made us feel very much at home.

    Mary Kennedy, October 2009
  • Rocktail Camp was wonderful. All the staff were so helpful and friendly, the managers Gareth and Liz as well as the Dive team Darryl and Vanessa were just excellent and again the food was extremely good!

"The lodge is situated in walking distance of the pristine coastline of northern Maputoland. The tented rooms have been elegantly set amongst the natural forest offering peace and tranquillity, while the marine protected reserve offers some of the most exclusive diving in South Africa. If travelling during the turtle season, I highly recommend the late night excursion!"
