overview

Chiawa Camp is located on the banks of the Zambezi River, in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. The thatched and tented camp is shaded by a forest of mahogany and acacia trees and enjoys marvellous views over the Zambezi River Valley. Set out on day and night game drives, and guided walks to view lion, leopard and buffalo.

Embark on river cruises or canoeing excursions to view elephant and hippo at close quarters. Anglers will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of catching (and releasing) the famous tiger fish. Alternatively, relax on the deck of your tent or in the camp's observation deck to observe the wildlife.

Dining

The chefs at Chiawa Camp take immense pride in preparing delicious cuisine, be it a scrumptious bush breakfast, a secluded picnic lunch, or a romantic dinner on an island in the Zambezi.

Breakfast and lunch are usually served in the open, and vary from a plated meal or a hot/cold buffet, depending on the day's activities. Dinner is a more formal affair and consists of a 4-course meal served under the stars at the boma or on a sand bar in the Zambezi River.

Accommodation at Chiawa Camp is in nine spacious safari tents, which are set on elevated timber decks with large viewing terraces. Each tent has a king-sized bed and an en suite bathroom with dual vanities, indoor and outdoor hot showers, and a claw bath.

Traveller Reviews

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Chiawa Camp. We want to thank you for this amazing trip.

    Gilles Caruso, June 2011
  • The transfer by car to the camp was almost 2 hours and by the time we got there we were pleased to find a wonderful camp with its location right by the Zambezi. We were lucky Grant Cummings himself was spending a few days so we were privileged to talk to him and experience his impact on the region. The program at Chiawa is very broad and full of surprises, incl. surprise lunch in the bush and breakfast on the river. The animal sightings were less good here than in Nsefu, due to different landscape, however guide knowledge was as good as Nsefu. The tents are more rustic than at Nsefu but with a very colonial safari style charm. The food was equally good. The highlight was a canoeing trip down the river, followed by sundowners on the river bank.
