Set in 25 acres of tropical gardens with over 1000 palm trees, Sultan Sands in Kiwengwa is conveniently located within an hour’s drive from Zanzibar International Airport. This beach resort offers unpretentious accommodation in 76 beach bungalows with views over the lush gardens or white-sand beach. The architecture is inspired by traditional African rondavels while the interiors are simple and comfortable.

Oasis Spa promises to restore body and mind, while the private beach and range of water-based activities promise to revitalise you. Soak up the tropical sun or dip into the gin-clear waters - try snorkelling and scuba diving the nearby coral reefs or the thrill of water skiing.  Spend long lazy afternoons unwinding with a good book on the stylish sun beds around the swimming pool, sipping iced cold drinks and fruity cocktails. Your little ones are happily entertained in the Children’s Club, where their day is filled with indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts and the chance to experience a taste of Swahili culture.

Gather the family together for a fun game of tennis on the floodlit court or take a dreamy stroll along Sultan Sands’ pristine beach – however you spend your days, this resort balances action with relaxation, and our time with family time.

Sultan Sands is the sister resort of nearby Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa, allowing Sultan’s guests access to Bluebay’s facilities. This includes the Oasis Spa, a recreation centre and the Children’s Club.

The recreation centre is the booking and information hub for both resorts – find your scuba instructor and gear hire here along with options for big game fishing, motor boating and water skiing. After an action-packed day on the water, indulge your senses at the Oasis Spa where the therapists incorporate oils from local spices and fruits to revitalise your body and mind.

Give your children the opportunity to socialise with other youngsters and enjoy the well-run program at the Children’s Club. Each week the club focuses on a particular theme that is explored in outdoor and indoor games, arts and crafts and even an introduction of some Swahili culture and language. Don’t be surprised if your little one greets you with a cheerful “Jambo!” one morning!

General Facilities

Sultan Sands offers two restaurants and two bars to keep your dining experience interesting. Mwambao Restaurant serves breakfast and dinner for all resort guests along with lunch for fully inclusive guests. The restaurant is strictly smart casual - no shorts and collared shirts for men, dresses recommended for women - and boasts idyllic views over the sparkling pool and the wide blue ocean beyond.

Kivuli Bar & Restaurant offers a delightful toes-in-the-sand dining experience on the beach. Kivuli offers a luncheon menu with fresh salads, hearty sandwiches and light main dishes, including Zanzibari-style tapas.

Mawimbi Bar is a convivial spot serving ice cold drinks and fruity cocktails – a great place to socialise with fellow guests or simply admire the view. The Casablanca Lounge provides a sophisticated atmosphere and after-dinner drinks for both Sultan Sands and Bluebay guests. It’s located between the two resorts and offers a chic setting for late night revelry.

Pwani Room

The 56 Pwani rooms are raised above the ground in beautifully landscaped gardens. Each thatched-roof bungalow features a spacious verandah with comfortable furniture and stunning views, looking out over either lush tropical vegetation or the resort’s private beach. Each bungalow is air-conditioned and simply furnished with either a king-size or two queen-sized beds. A separate dressing room leads into an en suite bathroom with his-and-her basins and a glass-walled shower.

Traveller Reviews

  • All too easy and straight into beach mode. Great little hut in the front row facing the ocean. Just beautiful. Invitation to join the Manager for drinks that night at Blue Bay (adjoining resort). Drinks and nibbles, lot of people and told to make ourselves comfortable and use facilities at both Sultan Sands and Blue Bay as they are owned/operated by same company. As they say in the brochures – wind down after your safari at Zanzibar. We had one full day at the resort and just lounged around and used the pool and watched the beautiful changing colours of the Indian Ocean and the sailing boats as the tides came and went.

    Neil Burnell, April 2012
  • All the accommodations were very good. The food at Sultan Sands was wonderful.
