overview

Named after the big cats that regularly stalk the gazelle of its remote location, Lion Camp lies in a secluded corner of Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park that is only accessible during the June-to-October dry season. For the rest of the year, heavy rains result in rich vegetation and brimming waterholes, meaning a thriving panoply of game for travellers to enjoy when the lodge reopens.

In addition, the area is also home to what is thought to be Africa’s densest concentration of hippos and Nile crocodiles, as well as being renowned for its leopard population, one of the most elusive of all African predators.

Friendly staff, colourful suites, excellent service and knowledgeable guides make Lion Camp and ideal wildlife destination to be combined with a visit to thrilling Victoria Falls or the Lower Zambezi for the ultimate Zambian safari.

Facilities

Perhaps the most striking aspect of Lion Camp’s welcoming interiors is the tasteful use of traditional, intricately-detailed African batik fabrics: shocking pinks, acid greens and vivid yellows stimulate the eye and provide an exciting contrast to the khaki tones of the surrounding savannah.

When you are not tracking a group of tawny lionesses expertly stalking a zebra, unwind at the sparkling infinity swimming pool enjoy a drink in the bar, test your skills at the snooker table, keep an eye on the nearby waterhole or lose yourself in a book from the library. End the day around the crackling fire pit, identifying the constellations above and planning the next day’s exhilarating adventure.

Lion Camp also has a small sundries shop and a daily laundry service.

Dining

Start the day with a continental breakfast that includes daily treats like brioche French toast or granola yoghurt pots. After your morning game drive or walk, sit down to buffet brunch that always includes fresh salads, home-baked bread and dessert. Afternoon tea is a choice between savoury and sweet, like an aromatic cardamom cake. Take pre-dinner drinks and canapés on the deck at sunset before tucking into a 3-course plated supper under the soft glow of lantern light, and often to the distant call of roaring lions.

Vegetarians, vegans and other special dietary requests can be accommodated.

Luxury Canvas & Thatch Chalet

Each of the nine guest suites is built on a raised platform connected by a wooden walkway to the main lodge. Sympathetically built from timber, thatch and canvas and incorporating elements of their surroundings, the suites are spacious, stylishly decorated and very comfortable.

Four-poster beds are romantically swathed in mosquito netting, and a lounge area leads to the separate en suite facilities that feature a hot shower and flush toilet. The rooms have wide verandahs from which to enjoy the view over the lagoon and its ever-changing wildlife.
