Close to the remote Deception Valley region of Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Kalahari Plains Camp is an ideal base from which to discover the secrets of this little-visited but hugely rewarding destination. Built from canvas and timber, this completely solar-powered camp offers morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles, guided walks to discover the fascinating secrets of life in the desert and some surprisingly excellent bird watching.

Many of the staff are descended from the local San/Bushman clans and will gladly explain aspects of their unique culture during your walk. Keep an eye out for the Kalahari's abundant herbivores - gemsbok, giraffe, wildebeest, eland - as well as the predators that follow closely behind. Game viewing is excellent throughout the year but it is at its most spectacular during the early summer months when the rains turn the desert green with new grass, attracting not just thousands of springbok but the cheetahs, lions and leopards that prey on them.

  • Set in a remote part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
  • Spectacular summer game viewing & birding
  • Excellent area for big cat sightings
  • Great opportunity to see small, rare predators
  • Interact with local Bushman communities
  • Fantastic all-year round safari destination

Traveller Reviews

  • All of the camps we visited (Jao, Kalahari Sands, and King's Pool) were fantastic, the service and accommodations more than we expected, and the knowledgeable staff extremely helpful and informative. Our service at Kalahari Sands was great, and it truly is a wonderful camp. Most importantly, I would like to let them know that our guide at Kalahari Sands, Mwamo Poneso Mwamo, was the perfect guide for us. He was patient with my questions and showed a true passion for his job and his country.

    Bob Jennings, April 2015
  • The camp in Kalahari plains is not well run and the guide there was a bit uninvolved, the others excellent. But the experience of starting outside the Delta was wonderful.

    Peter Krcmar, March 2014
  • Kalahari Plains was so good - we did the sleep out under the stars and it was magical.

    Emma Martin, May 2012
  • Our over all experience was okay. We had limited animal sightings, different to what was expected, but accommodation and food was good.

    Ken Williams, March 2011
