Located just outside Uganda's renowned Queen Elizabeth National Park, Katara Lodge is perched on the Kichwamba escarpment, formed as a result of ancient volcanic activity. The lodge offers excellent views over the 72 craters, Lake Edward, and the Virunga and Rwenzori mountain ranges.

Go on game drives in the Queen Elizabeth National Park and explore the savannah, dense papyrus swamps, crater lakes, and the extensive Maramagambo Forest, as well as the forested Kyambura Gorge. The area is host to almost 100 mammal species and over 600 different birds. Look out for hippo, elephant, buffalo, lion and hyena, as well as the indigenous Uganda kob and the giant forest hog. Other activities include boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel, chimp tracking, and village walks.

Dining

After a day of exciting game viewing and bush adventures, return to the lodge where you'll tuck into delicious Ugandan-inspired meals either outside on a private veranda or in the main dining area under a thatched roof. While you enjoy your meal, you can admire the spectacular views leading over the western side of the lodge with the striking Rwenzori Mountains as a backdrop.

Luxury Cottages

Katara Lodge consist of seven luxurious thatched cottages: six standard cottages and one family cottage. Dotted along a beautiful hillside and overlooking the open savannah, cottages are well spaced out to provide maximum privacy.

Each cottage has been hand-crafted from local materials and carved into the hillside by the Katara village community. To maintain the rustic, elegant feel, the cottages have wooden floors, grass thatched roofs and fold-away canvas fronts to maximize your views.

The cottages each boast a large, open sleeping and sitting area, with a double bed and a four poster star bed that can be wheeled out onto the veranda so you can choose to sleep directly under the starlit African sky. The bathrooms feature romantic roll-top baths, rain showers and solar-heated water systems.

Other Room Types

The family cottage features two separate bedrooms, a small sitting area, and a bathroom. You'll find a double bed in one bedroom and two single beds in the other. The extra space can even be used for a third bed if you're travelling with three children. In addition, the family cottage comes with a private outdoor sitting area with a swing couch and two hammocks – the ideal place to rest and relax.

  • Katara Lodge was gorgeous and our room was gigantic and splendid. The food and service was delightful and the people working there were fabulous. We appreciated the support of the local orphanage that was exhibited through the sale of the jewelry and items made at the orphanage. When I looked out at the Rift Valley I thought that it was one of the sights that every person on the planet that is able should see during his or her lifetime. What a view!

  • Katara, will be nicer when the pool is finished. Pascal, the manager, tended to be forgetful as it took us two days to get laundry returned. Food varied and rooms were very nice but no lights till they brought the lanterns to the room and no torches. Service was good. Park was good for elephants and some folks reported seeing lions. Boat trip was exceptional!
