Ras Mbisi is a sustainably-built lodge on Tanzania's beautiful Mafia Island, set in tropical gardens next to eight kilometres of deserted beach. With its reputation for exceptional service and hospitality, the lodge focuses on relaxation but there's plenty to do when you are feeling active: explore powdery white beaches; marvel at the island's world-famous marine life; and wind things down with a sunset cruise. There are also coastal forests and mangrove creeks to explore.

Go fishing, snorkelling or even sea-kayaking where you may even be lucky enough to see whale sharks between November and February, and humpback whales between July and August. Children will be thrilled to witness turtle-hatching on the beaches between June and August. You can also just spend an afternoon lazing beside the swimming pool, just metres away from the beach, with a book from the library and a cocktail from one of the lodge bars.

There is limited phone coverage and no internet access at Ras Mbisi so this is the ideal destination for someone who really wants to get away from it all.

The helpful staff can arrange sunset cruises as well as day trips to Chole Island, Chungaruma lakes and Mlola Forest. Try your hand at fishing, snorkelling, sea-kayaking or sailing an n'galawa, a traditional fishing boat with a local boatsman.

Scuba-diving may also be arranged through dive centres in Chole Bay, allowing you to explore the beautiful underwater world of the Indian Ocean. After a long day exploring, unwind beside the pool on a sun lounger with a delicious cocktail in hand from the Mezzanine Sundowner or Dhow Bar.

Head to the library's the reference section to brush up on your local knowledge or just grab an easy reading novel to keep you occupied next to the pool. Stay entertained in the games area, equipped with a pool table and board games including Bao, a traditional East African count-and-capture board game.

Children are welcome at Ras Mbisi: the lodge provides baby cots, high chairs and a babysitting service on request.

Standard Room

Enjoy an unforgettable sunrise or sunset from the comfort of one of the nine simple but well-appointed 'open tent' bandas, a stone's throw away from the beach. The bandas are set among coconut trees and are linked to the main lodge by a sand path. Roofs are made from makuti thatch that drops down on either side, exposing the three sides of the banda to the ocean breeze. Drop down the white cotton screens in the evening or keep them open exposing the lovely night sky.

Each room consists of a king-size, four-poster bed, a private en suite bathroom with a rain shower, furniture made by local craftsmen using local sustainable coco-wood and a spacious deck off the bedroom with chairs that allow you to enjoy incredible beach and ocean views.
