Blog Posts & Recent Travels

I recently visited Zanzibar with my colleague Anja - read all about our experiences in my blog posts, 'Zanzibar: An African Beach Paradise', 'Dhows of Zanzibar' and 'Exploring Stone Town'.

My latest trip took me into the wilds of KwaZulu Natal - see some of my photos captured in this Google+ album.

About Me

I was born and raised in Johannesburg as a young child but as a teenager I went to a small boarding school in the Natal Midlands in KwaZulu Natal. From there I moved back to Johannesburg for a couple years but my desire to travel and experience new places found me heading down to Cape Town to complete my studies in Tourism Management.

While in Cape Town I started my first real job at Go2Africa. After completing two years as a consultant in Cape Town, I moved back to Johannesburg to work with Wilderness Safaris. But once again I wanted to travel and experience something new so I took an opportunity to work in Botswana at Savuti Bush Camp; a small luxury safari lodge in the Linyanti Concession.

This turned out to be one of my biggest life-changing decisions. I spent two wonderful years working in the camp as a camp manager and was priviledged to experience the wonders of Botswana in this time. After getting married in September 2011, we left Botswana, but after living such a unique lifestyle in the bush we simply could not go back to big city life so we settled down in the small town of Mtunzini on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal.

As a young student I found my passion for photography. My focus has always been wildlife photography and my time in Botswana was the perfect opportunity to learn and grow this skill. I have recently developed a keen interest in travel photography and travel blogging. I love sharing my experiences with others. I am a nature and travel enthusiast.

I love to experience new places whether it be in my home town or thousands of kilometres away. We own a little Suzuki Jimny 4x4 which we use to travel at every opportunity. There is nothing better than venturing into a new destination. The excitement of experiencing a new world, learning about the people and enjoying its sense of place is what I love most about travel.

Where have I travelled

Locally, Cape Town – where I lived for four years; the Garden Route - I am a regular visitor here as I have family living there; the Kruger National Park – as a family we were frequent visitors to the Kruger. Nowadays I travel to the park whenever I have time to spare! I have experienced the highlights of KwaZulu Natal over the years but am looking forward to exploring it inside out now that it is all on my doorstep.

In Africa I've visited Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia (only briefly, must return some day soon) and of course I spent two years living on safari in Botswana.

My favourite travel moment

Wow, so many. I would probably have to say the first time we packed up our Suzuki and hit the open road to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. That was a turning point for me. It signalled the start of a lifelong dream – to own a 4x4 and travel Africa.

What I love about Africa

This is a question I often asked my guests at Savuti Bush Camp and the answers always amazed me. For some reason Africa has an effect on people which is often difficult to explain. I strongly believe that everyone has a need to connect to the natural world in one way or another. Africa satisfies this need. Africa has a different effect on everyone but I do believe just about everyone leaves here having had some kind of positive connection with the continent and their inner desire to get back in touch with nature. That’s what I love about Africa.

Some African travel advice

Come to Africa with an open mind and a hunger to experience something completely unique. Spend time with the local people and take the time to connect with the world around you - don’t rush it, Africa has this ability to draw you back year after year, there is a lot to experience.

Where I'd love to go next

I want to experience the mountain gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda. I have heard this is a life-changing experience.

Thornybush Water Lodge was great Stuart.  We love the place, the staff was friendly and again good food. We lucked out and saw the Big 5 plus a cheetah! We also saw a lion pride devouring a wildebeest with - bonus - cubs suckling on their mama. Apparently, cubs are rare sightings but we sawlLeopard babies too and those where the highlight of our safari adventure for the kids. Thanks so much for a brilliant time!
