About Me

I was born in Cape Town where I have lived all my life. My father has an absolute passion for travel and instead of watching cartoons we would watch National Geographic, Steve Irwin’s The Crocodile Hunter and Animal Planet. At the young age of four I already had my very first passport and since then have travelled every year and would like my children to do the same.

Besides travelling, I try and tick off something from my bucket list every three months. I enjoy setting short-term goals for myself and learning something new every day from my daughter Kaila.

Where have I travelled

My travel highlight in 2016 was a 10-day scheduled safari in Botswana. I visited Chobe National Park and enjoyed cruising along the Chobe River, as well as seeing Savute, Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta.

I also travelled with my family to Madikwe Private Game Reserve, Marataba Safari Lodge and Sun City - Kaila absolutely loved every minute of her first safari experience!

One of my very first luxury trips with Go2Africa was going on honeymoon and staying at Thonga Beach Lodge and Phinda Forest Lodge in kwaZulu-Natal and then enjoying a relaxing rail journey back from Pretoria to Cape Town on one of the most luxurious trains of the world – Rovos Rail.

In 2015 I travelled to Mozambique and visited Massinga Beach Lodge and Azura Benguerra where the highlight was singing and dancing with the children on the beach and enjoying a true ‘barefoot luxury’ experience!

One of the most unique and different safari experiences I have enjoyed and highly recommend to any returning clients wanting something different is Motse Lodge at Tswalu Kalahari. You are allocated your own private guide and vehicle; a highlight was getting off the vehicle to track aardvark, and walking among meerkats foraging. On our short stay we even spotted a pangolin, which is a very rare sighting. Read more about our experience here.

On one of our wedding anniversaries, I arranged for my husband and I to return to the Sabi Sands where we enjoyed stopping along the Panorama Route. We stayed at Exeter River Lodge and Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, which received a luxurious refurbishment at the end of 2016.

For my husband’s 30th birthday we travelled to Victoria Falls and stayed at Sussi & Chuma. Before relaxing in Mauritius where one of my favourite highlights was a subscooter experience.

I have been fortunate to overnight at a various city hotels in Cape Town and the Winelands. I have travelled on a number of occasions along the Garden Route and stayed at Grootbos Nature Reserve and even got engaged while staying at Schulphoek Guest House.

I have also enjoyed staying at Ivory Tree Game Lodge in the Pilanesberg National Park, which included a horse riding experience as an additional activity. Victoria Falls and the Sabi Sands (where I have visited most of the lodges such as Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge) are an absolute ‘must’ if you travelling with young children. I have also visited all of the Thornybush Game Reserve lodges and my favourite remains Thornybush Main and River Lodge!

Madikwe Safari Lodge was my first safari experience with my daughter. She enjoyed the kids’ programme, which included a backpack, and the Eco House was certainly a great highlight. I have experienced flying between the Sabi Sands and Madikwe and it’s certainly the way to go! It saves you on travel time and on landing you have the most breath-taking aerial view of the bush.

Internationally I have travelled to Malaysia, Madeira, Portugal and London.

My favourite travel moment

Watching a herd of elephants cross the river while on a boat in the Okavango Delta.

What I love about Africa

The diverse beauty of the continent and being able to experience so much in one place where every experience is unique.

My best African travel advice

Purchasing 'safari' clothing, such as khaki jackets and trousers, is not a must. Always pack a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and your swimming costume. Always check that you know the must-see attractions of the city or area you are visiting to ensure you make the most of your experience.

Our family joined our son who was studying abroad at the University of Cape Town for a 10 day vacation in South Africa. Normally I plan vacations myself but for this I thought we needed a savvy South Africa travel agent. Through a close friend we found Tanya Ellis at Go2Africa. She was so wonderful. Thorough, attentive, kind, polite, and responsive. She put together a simply amazing adventure for us in her beautiful city of Cape Town, the wine country, and especially the superlative luxury safari at Lion Sands in Kruger National Park. It was most certainly a "bucket list" trip which we have been raving about to all of our American friends. This trio has whetted our appetite for more travel in South Africa and other parts of Africa. And hopefully on a future trip we will finally get to meet our delightful Tanya in person for that long overdue drink!
