When you're a family travelling to Africa, the last thing you want to worry about is malaria. Well, now there's no need to stock up on expensive prophylactics before venturing on your African safari! From the verdant Eastern Cape to the big game wilderness of Madikwe, South Africa offers plenty of malaria-free game reserves where the big game of African legend can be viewed.
The reserves of the Eastern Cape Province including Shamwari or Kwandwe and Madikwe Game Reserve in the North-West Province boast everything that traditional game areas offer such as big game and luxury accommodation. These areas are ideal for family holidays, in particular families with small children, as they offer visitors peace of mind without compromising the experience of a wildlife safari.
Madikwe Game Reserve was once one of South Africa's best kept secrets, today, the reserve is fast becoming one of the country's most sought-after destinations. It's one of South Africa's largest game reserves and is made up of a number of vegetation zones.
The largest single translocation of game occurred at Madikwe in the 1990's when 12 000 animals of a variety of species were introduced into this area of degraded farmland. Madikwe, these days, is a fully operational eco-system playing host to a number of luxury lodges and can be accessed on a self-drive holiday or fly-in from Johannesburg.
The Eastern Cape Game Reserves weren't regarded as a major tourist destination in the past, however, today, the Eastern Cape is actually where the malaria-free safari concept was born and the province boasts a number of excellent game reserves providing memorable big game experiences.
Historically the area was one of the finest game areas in Africa before the arrival of the settlers more than 200 years ago. The settlers began to clear the land for farming by destroying the wildlife resulting in the extinction of many species from the area.
For more than 150 years, the sound of a lion's roar was not heard in the valleys of the Eastern Cape, a silence that has since been broken when lions were released on Shamwari Game Reserve some seven years ago.
We've put together a selection of holidays in beautiful South Africa which are family-friendly, where you can see the Big 5 and - best of all - are completely malaria-free.
Be pampered in stylish, uniquely African surroundings with wonderfully prepared food, attentive service and of course, knowledgeable guides to take you on exciting game drives.
