Planning routes for your African self-drive holiday lets you choose between self-drive destinations with dynamic landscapes, unique experiences and comfortably luxurious accommodation at the end of the road.
South Africa's self-drive routes take you through craggy mountain passes and picturesque vineyards, as well as along wild coastlines and wildlife-packed reserves. Learn about history and culture, eat wonderful meals and enjoy great hospitality - whatever you're looking for in an African self-drive holiday, South Africa can probably offer it.
The distances between towns in the Overberg and along the Whale Coast are not far so you'll have ample time to stop and smell the fynbos without losing valuable driving time. - Emma Gass, Essential Overberg and Whale Coast Advice
Just outside Cape Town is the Whale Route along the Overberg Coast, or plan a route through the fertile valleys of the Cape Winelands. There you can admire the towering mountain ranges fringed with trellised vineyards as you meander from one wine estate to another.
Continue along the wine route by travelling the Route 62 towards the ostrich capital of Oudtshoorn.
Over the mountains, on the coast, is the beginning of the famed Garden Route - a scenic drive that guides you past endless beaches, to hidden coves and through bustling seaside towns. Plan an adventure route to take advantage of the Garden Route's adrenaline-fuelled activities or just aim to eat good food as you drink in the scenery.
The natural surroundings are hard to beat in the Kruger Park area. Not only is there the very accessible Kruger National Park with its iconic African wildlife, but the Panorama Route adds jaw-dropping canyons and waterfalls to the equation.
KwaZulu Natal has wildlife too - and beaches, mountains, history and good old friendly hospitality.
South Africa also offers self-drive routes to the family-friendly fun of Sun City and the malaria-free game reserves of Madikwe and Pilanesberg in the same area.
Beyond South Africa's West Coast are the vast deserts of Namibia. Visit the shifting sands of Sossusvlei or explore the wildlife-packed Etosha National Park for a different take on African routes.
