This 15-day safari takes you to some of Africa's best known game viewing areas. The National Parks and reserves of northern Tanzania need little introduction to wildlife enthusiasts. The vast Serengeti National Park is arguably the finest reserve on the continent, home to millions of plains animals and a profusion of predators. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, whilst Tarangire National Park is well known for its dense elephant population and magnificent baobab trees. Add to this Mount Meru, Africa's 5th highest mountain, at 4566 m, which dominates the horizon when visiting the bustling town of Arusha, the gateway to the reserves of northern Tanzania. This safari explores Africa's tribal people and its wildlife, unchallenged in their diversity.
Highlights included: Nairobi, Mount Kenya, Samburu National Park with 2 included game drives, Thompsons Falls, Lake Nakuru NP with 1 included game drive, Masai Mara NP with 3 included game drives, Tarangire NP, Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks and excursion.
- Day 1: Nairobi - Mount Kenya
- Itinerary
On the first day of your tour, you gather in Nairobi for a pre-departure meeting which covers all aspects of your trip and gives you the opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and guides. You head out of the city and travel north to your campsite at the foot of Mt Kenya (5199m), the 2nd highest mountain in Africa. You have the afternoon free to relax or enjoy an optional walk in the forest around the base of the mountain, known for its prolific bird life and black & white colobus monkeys.
- Days 2-3: Samburu
- Itinerary
You go on a game drive en route to your campsite in the Samburu National Reserve. The park is situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River and the fresh water and shady riverbanks attract wildlife like elephant, lion, giraffe and zebra from the surrounding savannah plains. Leopards are also regularly spotted and the Uaso Nyiro is home to huge crocodiles, some over 6 metres (20 feet) from snout to tail.
On Day 3 you start your day with a morning game drive, returning to camp for lunch. In the afternoon, once the temperature cools off, you have another opportunity to spot wildlife on an afternoon game drive.
- Day 4: Thompson's Falls
- Itinerary
Today you travel to Thompson's Falls, arriving at about lunch time. You have the afternoon free to explore the area at leisure. The picturesque and impressively proportioned 75m waterfall is particularly spectacular during the rainy season.
You spend your night camping in Thomson Falls Lodge, which is positioned overlooking the river.
- Day 5: Lake Nakuru
- Itinerary
You travel to your campsite on the Kenana Farm, your base for visiting Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is famous for its flamingos and up to 2 million of these beautiful birds gather here to feed on the abundant algae. You can enjoy a game drive through the park (included) which is also a rhino sanctuary. Sightings of black and white rhino are common, as are lion and buffalo, and the area is also well known for its leopard.
Other activities available include a visit to a local community development project called the Kenana Knitters, or the local school.
- Days 6-7: Masai Mara National Reserve
- Itinerary
The famous Masai Mara Game Reserve comprises open savannah plains, interspersed with patches of acacia woodland and, along the Mara River, riparian forest. The reserve is known for its density of animals, including the Big 5 and 453 species of birds. Game viewing is excellent in the Mara all year round, but the most popular time to visit is in late July and August, when over one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra migrate from the Serengeti. The dramatic river crossings are a gruesome spectacle of survival of the fittest.
You set up camp here for 2 nights and enjoy early starts to your day with morning game drives, returning to camp for a late breakfast or brunch. During the hotter part of the day you have time at leisure to relax and chat about your game sightings before heading off into the African bush again for an afternoon drive. Dinner is served around the campfire, listening to the sounds of the open bush.
- Day 8: Masai Mara to Nairobi
- Itinerary
You enjoy a hearty breakfast before packing up camp, and heading back to Nairobi. You arrive in Kenya's capital around lunchtime, and check into your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the bustling and cosmopolitan city.
- Day 9: Nairobi - Tarangire National Park
- Itinerary
Other travelers may join you tour at this point. You depart Nairobi at about 8am and make your way over the border into Tanzania. Your guides will assist with all formalities, and after clearing customs and immigration, you'll be on your way to Tarangire National Park. This park has the highest concentration of game outside the Serengeti ecosystem, and is home to tree-climbing lions, leopards and pythons, as well as plains' game and elephant.
- Days 10-11: Excursion to Serengeti National Park
- Itinerary
The Serengeti, which means "endless plains" in Masai, is one of the best known wildlife areas in the world. The spectacular annual migration of wildebeest begins here in late May or early June, when over 6 million hooves pound the legendary plains in search of greener pastures. The park is also famous for its abundance of larger game, such as lion, leopard and elephant, and the rare and almost extinct wild dogs can sometimes be seen.
Your stay here includes morning and afternoon game drives in the park, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore this spectacular piece of Africa.
- Day 12: Ngorongoro Crater
- Itinerary
Today you drive to Ngorongoro Crater. This gigantic 259sq.km caldera is one of the wonders of the world, teeming with wildlife and birdlife including herds of zebra, gazelle, wildebeest and the Big 5. You descend into the crater using 4x4 vehicles for an exciting game drive in this natural wildlife enclosure.
