With its recent history influenced by European colonizers and missionaries, Botswana is officially a Christian country. Services are usually conducted in Tswana although English is often used in urban centres.
The number of practicing Christians however stands at about 20%, and worship will often incorporate faith healing and traditional beliefs.
These older, more widespread beliefs are based on ancestry, according great respect for ancestors and a belief that they continue their existence in the spirit world and affect daily life.
Other religions, including Hinduism and Islam, are largely restricted to expat communities.
