A glance at the map shows that Botswana appears to be empty.

True, it is a huge, mostly uninhabited country dominated by the Kalahari, but as our Botswana Travel Guide shows, the country has a thriving economy (one of Africa's most successful), a fascinating culture and a rich history - read our people & culture feature for more information.

It is of course for the wildlife that visitors come to Botswana but there are clearly defined travel areas which deliver different wildlife experiences.

The vast majority of safaris take place in the northern half of the country where you'll find classic safari destinations like the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park but for those who would like to experience a slice of urban life, Botswana's towns & cities are largely found in the southern half of the country.

"The Golden Age of the African hunting safari may be over but the grizzled Great White Hunters haven't hung up their rifles just yet. With a trusted firearm by their side they still track game through the wilds of Botswana, but they now line up their targets through a camera's viewfinder rather than the scope of a high-powered hunting rifle....." - Dominic Chadbon, 'An Interview with Dougie Wright', June, 2008.
