Botswana safaris are extremely varied in length, character and destination. It is always useful to get an idea of the main travel regions or areas of Botswana before making your final decision as to which one of our Botswana safaris is right for you.

Botswana is divided up into 10 administrative regions, but for the Botswana safari traveller it is more useful to use broader geographical divisions.

Up North - Classic Safari Country

Most visitors head for the northern third of Botswana - this is where you will find the great parks and reserves: Chobe and Moremi Game Reserve, as well as the world famous Okavango Delta.

This is a sparsely populated region with huge areas of wilderness, enigmatic rivers and swamps, and massive concentrations of wildlife - but the good news is that there are many safaris on offer to explore this wild region: check out our Botswana Tours and Safaris section for a complete range of exciting itineraries.

Kalahari Region

The adventurer may want to explore the central region of Botswana where remote and rarely visited parks and reserves of the challenging Kalahari grasslands await: the enormous Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the beautifully compact Nxai Pan National Park and the rolling savannahs of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park are full of wildlife and adventure.

The dry south-west is classic Kalahari country and far off the beaten track while extensive cattle ranching takes place in Botswana's west.

Down South - the Cities

Eighty percent of the population lives in the more fertile and better-watered south-east crescent, home to Botswana's capital - Gaborone - and the major urban centres but as a safari-goer your accommodation will be far from these urban centres: have a look at our Botswana Accommodation section to see what is available in the areas you want to visit.
