Born as a gold mining town at the confluence of the Tati and Inchwe rivers, Francistown is one of the oldest towns in Botswana and site of southern Africa's first gold rush. Today, Francistown is a major travel hub, with a railway station and airport serving as transit stops for those heading north and west to the safari-lands.
The city is also linked by major roadways to Gaborone, Zimbabwe, the Kazungula ferry crossing into Zambia and Maun - the gateway to the Okavango Delta.
If you are on a mobile Botswana safari or a self-drive holiday from South Africa, you'll pass through this town. Stock up and fill up; there's not much for the next 500 kilometres, west or north. Francistown is nevertheless close to some of Botswana's most fascinating sights like the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and the Tuli Block.
Francistown is an important centre for industry and commerce. With a population of more than 60,000, due to the influx of mining and manufacturing jobs and a growing international corporate presence, Francistown has doubled in size in the last decade.
