Ghanzi is the administrative center of the Ghanzi District, a region in west-central Botswana. Known as the Capital of the Kalahari, it is situated at the far end of a few hundred kilometres of empty road that pass through a stupefyingly monotonous landscape.
Ghanzi is intriguing for this reason, and also because the town's population is a curious mixture of the ethnic groups of the wider Africa region - Bushmen, Bakgalagadi, Baherero, Batswana and Afrikaners - who farm the surrounding areas. But you shouldn't feel inclined to visit the town unless you have an insatiable taste for isolation and truly empty spaces.
