A fishing line thrown over the side, a coolbox crammed with snacks and ice cold drinks, the streaky orange and purple sky of an Okavango sunset ... and the exhilarating trip back to a welcome campfire as the heat of the day rapidly turns into the chill of early evening.

Lodges built on or near permanent water offer motorboat trips to experience the Delta. The boats normally consist of aluminium bodies with a powerful outboard motor, they are fitted with fixed bench seating and offer a stable platform from which to take photographs. Most boat rides start in the afternoon and end with sunset out on the water.

The boat guides know their area well and can usually be relied on to tempt an African fish eagle off its perch to swoop down and grab a fish from right in front of your camera.

Lacking the serenity of a mokoro ride, a boat nevertheless gives you the opportunity to cover greater distances and a wider range of habitats. They also give you the chance to explore the deeper and more open stretches of water that the mokoro cannot access. Your guide can take you safely to chaotic heronries, lagoons full of hippos or deepwater channels to search for big crocodiles.
