Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and services the remote safari lodges of northern Botswana, in particular the Okavango Delta especially as most of the safari camps in the Okavango can only be reached by air. Indeed, such is the number of Okavango Delta flights that Maun airport is one of the busiest in Africa.

There are a number of air charter companies based in Maun that ferry visitors in and out of the Delta. As the landing strips in the Okavango Delta are generally very short and untarred, the only planes able to land are the smaller aircraft. These charter flights are normally part of your itinerary and seldom last more than an hour. Many charter companies prefer to fly in the cooler morning as the rising heat of the day can make a flight a little on the bumpy side.

Most visitors arrive in Maun via Johannesburg and at present Air Botswana is the only commercial airline flying this route. Maun airport also receives visitors from Gaborone, Cape Town, Windhoek and Zimbabwe.
