Land-Based Camps in the Okavango Delta

The thought of a 4x4 game drive vehicle grinding along a dusty sand road or winding its way through the tall, mature trees of a forest may not be the first image that the Okavango Delta. However, with vast areas of the Delta dependent on the flood waters that only arrive during the height of the dry season, many of the lodges exploit this time of year by focusing their activities on land.

Indeed, some sites are chosen precisely for the benefits afforded by the access to large areas of dry land - namely game viewing on day and night drives and walking trails. Additionally, camps are usually located near or overlooking permanent sources of water where wildlife is concentrated.

Before you book a stay at a lodge, it's important to find out whether it is one that's affected by the unpredictable water levels - year round mokoro trips and boating are not guaranteed at some camps.

Chief's Camp - Its location on Chief's Island in the Moremi Game Reserve ensures excellent land-based game viewing. The most biologically productive area in the Delta, the wildlife in this region, which also includes Mombo and Little Mombo, is about the best in southern Africa. The birdlife is excellent and morning and afternoon game drives are famous for their incredible sightings of predators.

Xakanaxa Camp - Named after the lagoon it overlooks, there are water-based activities on offer, but the lodge lies in an area of rich habitat diversity. At the western end of a landmass that meets the permanent swamps, a network of game drive trails guarantees great game viewing and birding. Camp Moremi and Camp Okuti are located nearby.

Khwai River Lodge - With views stretching out over the Khwai River floodplains and the north-east Moremi Game Reserve, this lodge is located in an area of legendary wildlife. The Khwai River extends its lifeline of water into the dry season's parched bush and the game viewing is superb.
