Okavango Delta » Activities » Solitude

The Okavango Delta is a 12, 000km2 watery wilderness and all camps can safely say that they offer their guests the opportunity to feel far-removed from the hustle of modern life. Most camps are only accessible by air and some may be marooned for weeks by rising floodwaters or heavy rains.

Accommodation in the Okavango Delta is designed with privacy in mind: tents or chalets are often built so that you cannot see another sign of civilisation and you'll always find a quiet spot to spend a lazy afternoon with a book or pair of binoculars.

Lodge staff in the Delta pride themselves on their flexibility and willingness to work around the wishes of their guests: private activities or dinners can easily be arranged.

There are however areas of the Delta where a denser concentration of camps exist, while other lodges are located in particularly remote regions.

We Recommend:

Duba Plains Camp - Perhaps the remotest lodge in the Delta, Duba Plains is built on a shady tree island overlooking seemingly endless floodplains, teeming with wildlife. A small, intimate camp of only six tents, Duba Plains offers great game drives and bush walks. Its northern location means it is inundated with the floodwaters that arrive in May, adding to the lodge's sense of isolation.

Mombo and Little Mombo - At the northern tip of Chief's Island sit the two Mombo camps in an area world famous for its wildlife. Located in the Moremi Game Reserve - and far from other camps - means that solitude is guaranteed. These camps also go out of their way to ensure privacy for groups, couples or individuals with private dinners or game drives on request. Why not spend the whole day out on a private 4x4 drive?

Xugana Island Lodge - Deliberately located to be as far from the crowds as possible, this small, intimate lodge is set deep in shady riverine forest and overlooks a remote, inky lagoon. No growling vehicles will shatter the serenity here - the only sounds will be those of the Delta: rustling papyrus, tinkling frogs and the grunt of a hippo.
