The vast wetlands of the Okavango Delta, an intricate web of channels and floodplains, create a wilderness that is usually only accessed by air.
Most visitors will therefore plan a fly-in itinerary, taking in a variety of land and water-based lodges. Mobile safaris are also available - with both camping and Okavango Delta accommodation - that usually form part of a larger Botswana safari.
These trips will explore the areas where dry land meets the waters of the Delta - predominantly the Moremi Game Reserve's eastern landmasses. The game viewing in the Khwai River, Xakanaxa and Third Bridge areas is particularly good.
Mobile camping safaris are perhaps the most honest way to experience the Delta. Set up your tent under a giant tree next to a sparkling river and sit at night around a camp fire as hyenas lurk in the shadows.
Public campsites in Moremi are basic at best and most companies offer luxury camping safaris, achieving a degree of comfort that would not have been amiss in Hemingway's day.
Similar itineraries are available in accommodated form: your guide will drive through stunning scenery from one luxury lodge to another, and most of these tours include an exciting boat transfer or flight to a water-based camp.
Tailormade trips are a good option for those who wish to experience as much of the Okavango Delta as possible or specialise in a certain aspect of it, birding for example.
