The Okavango Delta is a vast area of wetlands where water channels meander through swamp and floodplain. The region is subject to both seasonal flooding and, conversely, dry stretches. Lodge sites are chosen to reflect the aspect of a certain area and some lodges may be predominantly land-based in the dry season.
What most people come to the Delta for is to immerse themselves, literally and figuratively, in the clear waters of the Okavango. Water-based camps may not necessarily offer the amazing game viewing of the land-based camps, but they are a more relaxing and tranquil environment. Gently drift downstream on mokoro on a crisp morning, or enjoy the thrill of a motor boat trip to spot swimming elephants or huge, watchful crocodiles.
Camp Okavango - Set deep in the permanent swamps of the northern Delta, Camp O, as it is known, boasts mokoro trips with knowledgable guides, boat trips to remote backwaters and frenetic heron colonies, and walks on the many game-filled islands that dot the area. The island is large enough to sport resident antelope species and elephants often pass through.
Xugana Island Lodge - An unrivalled location in shady riverine forest overlooking a deep, permanent lagoon - boating, mokoro trips and bush walks are on offer at Xugana. Your evening meal is punctuated by snorting hippos and a chorus of tinkling frogs. Located in the northern Delta, Xugana is one of the Delta's longest established camps.
Little Vumbura - Located on a small island in a horizon-stretching ocean of floodplains, this camp does offer game drives when water levels permit but its position in the remote northern Delta makes it a great camp for water-based activities. The mix of wet and dry habitats means excellent bird watching, and predators are also well-represented here.
