The geography of Okavango Delta
Situated in the northern part of Botswana is the Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta on Earth, and final destination of the Okavango River. Its headwaters however are located in the wild highlands of central Angola and the river also cuts through Namibia's Caprivi Strip.
Essentially a large sink into which the waters drain away into the Kalahari sand, there are 2 distinct faces to the Okavango Delta: the permanent waterways covering an area of between 2 000 and 3 000km2 which, when the the annual flood of fresh water arrives around June or July, increases to around 12 000km2 of seasonal floodplains and channels. Less than 2% of the Delta's waters make their way out of the Delta as other waterways.
Around one third of the Okavango Delta is protected in the form of the Moremi Game Reserve and there are many private concession areas - for both hunting and photographic tourism - while there is also some small-scale farming in the western Delta.
