Depart Nairobi and descend into the Great Rift Valley, which is an enormous cleft in the Earth's surface stretching from the Red Sea to Madagascar. Your first stop is Lake Nakuru National Park, set around a shallow soda lake that attracts an enormous variety of birdlife.

Be mesmerised by thousands of flamingos as they gather at the lake to feed on algae in the water, forming a dramatic pink 'fringe' around the lake shore.

You can also spot rhino, leopard, warthog and baboon during your visit to the park.

From Nakuru continue north-west through lush plantations of tea - one of Kenya's biggest exports - to Eldoret, situated near the Uganda frontier.

Eldoret is the largest town in the Rift Valley Province and is a good place to stock up before continuing with your explorations - you can also do some exploring of the town that was originally founded by Afrikaners.

From Eldoret you'll cross over into Uganda - a fertile country of banana plantations and tangled rainforests. Spend 2 nights camping on the banks of the Nile River and visit Jinja - the Source of the Nile.

The camp overlooks an impressive set of rapids called Bujagali Falls and while here, you have the option of getting your adrenaline pumping with some white water rafting, quad biking or bungee jumping.

You can also take part in the Softpower project, which is a locally run volunteer programme aimed at building and improving schools in the area.

From Jinja head for Uganda's capital, Kampala, a vibrant colourful city filled with African street life.

Sharpen your bartering skills as you haggle with roadside traders, browse the bustling markets and enjoy a unique matatu - minibus taxi - ride around the city. Spend 2 nights in Kampala.

From Kampala travel south-west, skirting the coast of Lake Victoria and heading into the mountainous region of Uganda. Drive through beautiful terrain as you cross the equator, moving deep into the Kigezi Highlands where you will stop at Lake Bunyoni. Spend time admiring this ancient flooded valley with deep waters and scattered islands, before making your way to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Enter the park either through the main gates at Buhoma or through the southern Nkuringo area.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to half of the endangered mountain gorillas that inhabit this region of the world and local guides and trackers will lead you in small groups through the forest.

Gorilla trekking can be demanding but the honour of spending time with a family of gentle apes makes the effort worthwhile and will remain an unforgettable story to be recounted to friends and family many times over.

Gorillas are extremely social creatures, living in groups of 12 to 20 led by an alpha male known as a 'silverback' - silver hair grows on his back once he reaches maturity. They are also remarkably human-like in their interaction with each other and the way they play with their young.

After an incredible time spent in Bwindi you will return to the Kingdom of Buganda - Kampala - and spend a day discovering the hidden secrets of the city: the eclectic mix of Hindu temples, hilltop mosques, tribal memorials and elegant colonial hotels.

Indulge in some popular Indian cuisine and take a turn into the Buganda Royal Palace and the Kasubi Tombs before making your way to Eldoret.

The official town site of Eldoret started in 1910 with a post office on what was known to the white settlers as 'Farm 64', '64' or 'Sisibo' to the locals because, at that time it was 64 miles from the newly built Uganda Railway railhead at Kibigori.

Take some time out to explore this region, which is the bread basket of Kenya and predominately a farming region where maize, wheat farming and ranching take place on a large scale.

Depart from Eldoret and cross the Rift Valley once again to the lights and bustle of Nairobi, where your tour ends.
