The Aberdares is the name of the mountain range which forms a section of the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley in west central Kenya. The range travels directly north from Nairobi for more than 160 km and comprises moorland, icy rivers and thick forests. Some have even gone as far as describing this mountainous area as 'Scotland with Lions'.
This area was put on the tourist map in 1950 when Princess Elizabeth became Queen of England while she was on safari in the Aberdares.
The mountain range attracts large numbers of hikers and climbers, but the Aberdares is not without its safari attractions. The area is home to most of Kenya's wildlife, including the endangered Black Rhino. Much of the range has been protected within the Aberdare National Park which was created in 1950.
As the Aberdares mountain range slopes off to the east you'll find the well-known safari lodges, The Ark and Treetops. These lodges are also one of the main attractions of the Aberdares as both are built above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and bushbuck are regular visitors to the waterholes at night.
Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa, lies several kilometres east of the Aberdare Range.
