Unique View - overlooking the Yasabara waterhole, perhaps the largest salt-lick in the Aberdare Mountains, and the haunt of a variety of forest game.
All In The Same Boat - stay in a tree lodge, uniquely shaped to resemble the actual Ark.
Visual Splendour - numerous balconies and deck lounges provide superb vantage points for viewing the animals visiting the salt-lick and waterhole, while the ground-level bunker provides excellent photographic opportunities.
Opened in November 1969, The Ark is a tree lodge, uniquely shaped to resemble the actual Ark.
Access to vehicles is limited to conserve and protect the environment which hosts wildlife such as elephant, rhino, buffalo, bush bucks, giant forest hogs, Sykes monkey, leopard, and bongo. After lunch at The Aberdare Country Club, you can take a 45-min game drive within the National Park, arriving back at the lodge in time for afternoon tea.
The Yasabara waterhole and salt-lick is frequented by great numbers of animals including rare creatures such as the suni, and genet cat. The waterhole is floodlit until dawn to enable all-night viewing of game. The Ark provides a buzzer alarm in each cabin which is sounded by the game-spotter on duty to alert you when an interesting animal appears, or when something unusual happens. If you do not wish to be disturbed, the buzzer can be turned off.
Children under the age of 7 are not permitted at the Ark unless on special "Children's nights".
LocationThe Ark is a standard safari lodge situated in the Aberdare National Park, in the Rift Valley, in Kenya.
DiningThe main dining room has long, softly lit tables, and the far side of the split-level room has a glass wall through which you can view the dense forest. The menu at The Ark is a cosmopolitan combination of European and Kenyan dishes, made from an abundance of fresh Kenyan produce. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are Table d'hôte.
The Ark also offers a lounge with a fireplace, which is lit from the afternoon to late at night. Comfortable leather settees surround the fireplace and the glass walls, while the bar sports leather-padded stools. The walls are graced with paintings of wildlife. Above the fireplace in the lounge hangs the preserved head of a black rhino, the creature having been trampled to death by an irked elephant at the waterhole.
The Ark has 60 guest rooms that are all en suite with a shower. All cabins have bedside lamps and carpeted floors to ward off the evening and morning chill. From your cabin you can enjoy views of the forest or waterhole. Cabins are provided with water flasks and glasses, hot water bottles and extra blankets.
