There are many ethnic groups in Kenya, which makes it extremely difficult to pin down a typical Kenyan culture. Today the people, and especially the urban youth, identify more and more closely with Western culture.
The vast majority of Kenyans are of African origin, with only about 1% of the population consisting of those of European, Asian or Arab origin. That majority, however, is further fragmented into 42 different tribes, each with its own unique culture and traditions, although there are often similarities in language and customs between tribes in close proximity.
There are a few attributes that apply to most Kenyans and differentiate them to some degree. Kenyans by and large are easy-going, amiable, humorous and helpful, making travelling here and interacting with them a real pleasure.
Any attempts to speak Swahili - the national language - to locals will be warmly received.
Swahili (KiSwahili) was originally an amalgamation of Arabic and the local African languages of the area. English is also spoken by many people throughout the country.
There are also many tribal languages such as Kikuyu, Luhia, Luo, Kikamba and many others spoken in Kenya.
Kenyans involved in the tourist trade speak English.
